Benjamin Stahl is a 2021 research intern in Microsoft’s Applied Sciences Group (ASG).

He is a Ph.D. student at the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM) at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria, where he also earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical and audio engineering.  His master’s was focused on both signal processing and sonification.

After earning his master’s degree, Benjamin started his dissertation on perceptually informed multi-microphone speech enhancement and joined the IEM for a one-and-a-half-year industry-cooperation project.  In the project, he worked on improvements for acoustic echo cancellation, direction-of-arrival estimation, and beam forming.  After the project, Benjamin took on a position as a university assistant and steered his research towards deep-learning-based speech-enhancement methods, speech and audio quality metrics, and perceptually motivated cost functions.

In his free time, Benjamin enjoys playing volleyball, hiking, woodworking, and cooking.
