With the lawsuits against High Star Security CEO Howard Erickson behind her, Ellen Parsons is moving ahead in her relationship with Chris Sanchez and setting up a new office for her law practice. Across town, Ellen’s mentor and ex-employer Patty Hewes is busy fending off requests to represent cyber-hacker Channing McClaren, whose whistleblower website is about to bring down a prominent Wall Street firm. As both women look to get their lives back on track in the wake of the complicated and deadly High Star suits, Patty looks to stop Ellen from testifying in her son Michael Hewes’s legal fight for custody of his young daughter. Knowing that Ellen could use a high profile case to jumpstart her new law practice, Patty suggests that McClaren get in touch with her.
With help from Princefield Investments employee Naomi Walling, McClaren exposes the investment bank’s pattern of insider trading. However, when his website publishes a series of incriminating documents, several emails that reveal Naomi’s sexual escapades with prominent Wall Street executives are also made public. Though her daughter Rachel contacts Patty to help her mother weather the storm that has erupted around her, Naomi refuses to discuss the revelations that have brought negative attention to both her and Princefield. Meanwhile, as Chris advises her not to testify against Patty in the custody suit, Ellen is approached by McClaren who, after insisting that he has no idea how the personal emails came to be included in his attack against Princefield, asks her to represent him if Naomi decides to sue.
When her mother refuses to act, Rachel wants to sue McClaren herself. Noting that Naomi is the one who has a case, Patty tells Rachel that she can’t do anything unless her mother changes her mind. However, when Naomi commits suicide, Patty agrees to pursue the case on Rachel’s behalf and quickly asks the judge in the custody hearing to remove Ellen from the witness list since they are now going to find themselves on opposing sides in the suit against McClaren.

Now on opposite sides of a case with her mentor, Ellen Parsons is careful to warn her client, cyber-hacker Channing McClaren, not to discuss the wrongful death lawsuit being filed against him by Patty Hewes’s client, Rachel Walling. However, after McClaren issues what amounts to an apology for the release of information that led Rachel’s mother, Naomi, to commit suicide, Ellen must quickly do damage control as Patty looks to exploit the opportunity. Once Judge Timothy Haring agrees to give Patty one week to come up with evidence to bolster her case, seeing them speaking privately in the courthouse hallway leaves Ellen concerned that she’s being undermined by their personal relationship. So as Ellen looks for a link between her mentor and Judge Haring, Patty sends Bill Herndon in search of proof that McClaren and the late Naomi Walling had an affair.
While looking for an associate to help with McClaren’s defense, Ellen is approached by Kate Franklin, a middle-aged attorney looking to return to work after raising a family. With Ellen’s offer in hand, Kate uses it as leverage to convince Patty – her former employer – to offer her an even better job. But when she returns to Ellen’s office insisting that she would never return to work for her ex-boss and onetime courtroom rival, Kate says that she overheard Patty on the phone with Haring. So, after uncovering some questionable decisions he made, Ellen convinces Judge Haring to recuse himself from the case.
Unaware that he’s being followed, McClaren dons a disguise after being picked up by a woman in a bar. While Patty presses Herndon for anything that could connect McClaren and Naomi, a private eye working for Ellen finds evidence that they may have stayed in the same hotel room one night. And while Ellen worries that her client isn’t telling her the truth, she is stunned to learn that not only has the case been reassigned to a less favorable judge, but also that Patty masterminded the switch by purposely raising suspicions about her relationship with Judge Haring.

With Kate Franklin on board, Ellen Parsons prepares to defend cyber-hacker Channing McClaren against a wrongful death lawsuit being brought by Patty Hewes on behalf of Rachel Walling. Though McClaren has consistently denied knowing her, Ellen pressures him to reveal the extent of his contacts with Naomi Walling, Rachel’s mother and a prominent Wall Street whistleblower who committed suicide following the release of some embarrassing personal information. Knowing that McClaren’s previous lies will damage his credibility, Ellen turns to Patty to negotiate the terms of Rachel’s deposition. And as Patty prepares her for Ellen’s questions, Rachel reveals that she has also failed to disclose that McClaren and her mother met face to face to negotiate how Naomi would release the incriminating information about her employer, Princefield Investments. Meanwhile, as Patty inadvertently misses an email message from a computer hacker claiming he can help her case, and McClaren’s shadowy backers worry that Ellen can’t win, Chris Sanchez discovers Ellen’s mom working in a New Jersey drugstore.
As the deposition gets underway, Ellen methodically walks Rachel through what her mother told her about her meetings with McClaren. And despite her detailed and damning account of a hotel meeting where McClaren sexually assaulted Naomi, Ellen points out that Rachel has no firsthand knowledge of what happened that night. But when Rachel produces a dented engraved cigarette case that she says McClaren angrily threw at her mother during the attack, Ellen realizes that her case may be in trouble.
With day one of the deposition complete, McClaren adamantly denies Rachel’s account of the hotel room meeting and insists that nothing happened with Naomi. Knowing that they ended the day with an advantage, Patty tells Rachel that all she needs to do is to continue telling the truth. And after McClaren aide Rutger Simon speaks with the anonymous donor responsible for funding his boss’s whistleblowing activities, he warns Ellen that while she is getting paid for her work now, letting the case drag on could jeopardize its future. Meanwhile, after her mom insists that everything is fine at home, Ellen is stunned when she shows up at her apartment in the middle of the night tearfully seeking sanctuary. Finally, with Kate’s help, Ellen uses the deposition to prove that Rachel lied about her final phone call with her mother. And as Patty looks to regroup now that her client has been discredited, Kate arrives at her house with some surprising news about a former client.

As the wrongful death lawsuit against him moves forward, Channing McClaren sets out to break into the computer of Samurai 7, a computer hacker who claims to have more information about Naomi Walling and Princefield Investments. After narrowly preventing McClaren from accessing the data, Samurai 7 offers to sell him and his team the information. And while McClaren insists that it is his firm policy to never pay for leaks, his associates Rutger Simon and Gitta Novak secretly agree to buy the information anyway. Meanwhile, as Patty hires a lawyer and computer expert to help with the McClaren case, Ellen gets sidetracked after learning that her mother, Denise, has left her husband.
Unable to convince government investigators to allow her access to the Princefield computer servers, Patty argues her case in the media to fight back against Ellen. And though Ellen is successful at getting the judge to issue a gag order, she inadvertently undermines her own ability to respond to Patty’s accusations. Meanwhile, as her son Michael uses a magazine interview to discredit her, Patty learns that her granddaughter accidentally erased a message with an offer of help from Samurai 7.
When McClaren’s shadowy financial backers refuse to provide the $500,000 demanded by Samurai 7, lingering doubts about whether Naomi actually leaked the damaging information about Princefield leave Ellen facing a possible bidding war for the hacker’s data. Unaware that Patty has already decided to pay, Ellen ignores her accountant’s advice and takes out a loan to buy the information, too. Ecstatic that he now has two buyers, Samurai 7 first delivers it to Patty once her $500,000 has been transferred into his bank account. But after transferring her funds, Ellen is left empty-handed and deeply in debt when McClaren’s mysterious backer kills Samurai 7.

Plagued by dreams about her late fiancé’s murder, Ellen meets with Patty hoping to learn if she also paid Samurai 7 for the cache of documents from Princefield Investments that could hold the key to the wrongful death lawsuit against Channing McClaren. As Princefield CEO Bennett Herreshoff publicly expresses his sorrow over Naomi Walling’s suicide and his support of McClaren’s whistleblowing, a review of the documents Patty paid $500,000 for reveals that Herreshoff was investigating Naomi. But when questioned by Patty, Herreshoff won’t talk because of the ongoing SEC investigation of his firm. Meanwhile, as Ellen’s investigator Waleed Cooper looks for Samurai 7, McClaren gets an unexpected visit from Sally Portfrancis, who claims that the financial arrangement they set up ten years ago to support their mentally challenged son Charlie is no longer sufficient.
After asking to see Charlie as a condition of providing more money, McClaren tracks the boy to a diner where he is eating with Sally’s abusive boyfriend, Jeff Barducci. Following them to Sally’s apartment, McClaren asks Barducci to take better care of the boy. But when Barducci angrily refuses, McClaren asks Ellen’s advice on how he can keep him away from his son. Meanwhile, when Patty threatens to expose the government’s incompetence in the Princefield case, SEC investigator Clark Reinsdorf agrees to scour the company’s files for something linking Naomi to McClaren. And after Cooper gets Samurai 7’s girlfriend Beth Kim to reveal that Patty paid for the Princefield documents, the judge orders that they be turned over to Ellen.
Unhappy with the judge’s order, Patty turns up the heat on Reinsdorf to find something that can help her case. Learning that Barducci was arrested for theft, Ellen and her associate Kate Franklin suspect that McClaren had a hand in exposing him and wonder if he could have used the same skills to leak the emails that caused Naomi Walling to kill herself. Finally, after Herndon delivers the documents to Ellen saying that they provided no help to their case, Patty forces Reinsdorf to turn over the recording of a phone call that proves Naomi was having an affair with her boss, Bennett Herreshoff. And as McClaren gives Sally the money she needs to start over away from Barducci, Ellen learns that Samurai 7 is dead.

With the stress of the case continuing to provoke nightmares about her fiancé’s murder and its aftermath, Ellen worries that Patty has coerced the SEC into revealing information damaging to Channing McClaren’s defense. Desperate to rebut Rachel Walling’s claim that McClaren sexually assaulted her mother, Kate Franklin looks for Thomas Schultz, a man who was in the adjacent hotel room on the night in question. While Kate is unable to find him, Patty’s investigator William Herndon tracks him down after realizing that he checked in under an alias and that his name is really Thomas Weld. As Patty presses Weld to testify, and Ellen questions whether Naomi’s death was really a suicide, the negative publicity and subsequent damage to his business caused by the case lead McClaren to consider settling Rachel’s lawsuit out of court. Meanwhile, when approached about a case they argued years ago, Patty refuses to consider speaking with Kate’s aging former client.
As her late mother’s former co-worker Bruce Davies publicly berates Rachel for the problems the Princefield leaks have caused, Patty and Herndon interview Weld. Though he admits to seeing someone at the hotel who looked a lot like a photograph of McClaren wearing his disguise, Weld insists that he heard nothing unusual coming from Naomi’s room. Meanwhile, as Davies’s verbal assault prompts Rachel to consider dropping the lawsuit, Kate promises her mystery client that she will continue to press Patty to agree to meet.
Meeting secretly with Rachel, McClaren apologizes for whatever role he had in her mother’s suicide and offers her a generous settlement. So as Ellen continues to look for evidence that Naomi may have been murdered, Rachel tells Patty that she wants to take McClaren’s offer. While Patty encourages Rachel to press on in the hopes of getting even more money, Ellen learns that McClaren went behind her back to negotiate a settlement. However, when Patty asks to question Weld again, his story changes after a hotel manager produces a record of his complaint about noise of a fight coming from Naomi’s room. But after Weld’s testimony convinces Rachel to refuse McClaren’s $3 million offer, what she doesn’t know is that Ellen and Patty conspired to bribe Weld and the manager to lie in order to keep the lawsuit alive. Finally, upon arriving at the nursing home where he is living, Patty insists that her father – the mystery client Kate represented years ago – call off his efforts to re-open his case.

After Rachel Walling refuses his settlement offer, Channing McClaren learns of the death of Samurai 7, the hacker who gained access to Princefield Investments’ computer servers. And when Beth Kim tells Channing that his associates Rutger and Gitta Novak defied his orders and paid her late boyfriend for information, he explodes in anger. With the Walling lawsuit moving forward, the judge sends Patty and Ellen to Maine to jointly interview computer science professor Lee Collins, the SEC expert who’s conducting a forensic examination of the Princefield servers. Meanwhile, at a VA hospital, Chris is told that the Army is giving mentally unstable soldiers antidepressant drugs and then sending them back into combat in Afghanistan. But when he wants to leak the information to Channing, Ellen insists that he first provide proof.
As Ellen and Patty are in Maine questioning Dr. Lee about insider trading at Princefield Investments, back in New York Channing tracks down Bruce Davies, the Princefield employee whose career was ruined by the late Naomi Walling’s disclosures. Upset to learn that Princefield’s CEO Bennett Herreshoff had been conducting his own investigation into the activities of the fund he and Naomi worked for, Davies gives Channing the name of Helmut Torben, the source of the stock tips that facilitated the company’s insider trading. After Dr. Lee acknowledges that Naomi’s laptop computer was vulnerable to hacking, Ellen and Patty head for their return flight home. But when the weather takes a turn for the worse, the lawyers are grounded at the airport for a tense night together. Meanwhile, following a frank meeting with his estranged daughter, Miranda, Rutger tells Gitta that he, and not Channing, is the brains behind their organization.
Though she’s tried to keep it under wraps, Ellen tells Patty the truth about her mother’s recent move to New York. And while Patty tries empathizing by talking about her own troubled relationship with her father, Ellen accuses her of trying to manipulate her. When Channing returns to their office with news of his encounter with Davies, Rutger realizes that he’s close to finding out that the Hungarian mystery man funding their work is none other than Helmut Torben, the source of Princefield’s illegal stock tips. Warned about the danger of exposure, Torben insists that Rutger make sure that Channing can’t pursue the lead. Finally, Chris enlists the technician who monitored the patient interview videos to prove that the Army is redeploying mentally ill soldiers.

As Patty is asked to throw her hat in the ring as a potential Supreme Court nominee, Ellen’s associate Kate Franklin approaches Michael Hewes on behalf of his grandfather, Lyle, whom Michael believed was dead. Once they meet, Lyle recounts the details of Patty’s childhood and her subsequent efforts to cut him off from their family’s land before asking Michael to grant Patty custody of his daughter in exchange for the property. Meanwhile, Ellen’s search for the person she believes Patty paid to kill her leads to Uncle Pete’s widow, Stefania McKee. And when Patty insists on getting to the bottom of Channing McClaren’s finances, Bill Herndon warns her about the damage her reputation would suffer if she were to lose the lawsuit.
Told that Helmut Torben was both involved with insider trading at Princefield Investments and is also financing McClarenTruth, Ellen advises that they be cautious about using the information, even though it could help exonerate Channing in the wrongful death suit. Yet, unaware of Channing’s disclosure, Rutger Simon assures Torben that his role will not be revealed. Meanwhile, following an emotional session with a trauma counselor, Ellen gives the detectives who investigated her assault a bloodstained business card that she suspects could be used to identify her assailant. And after meeting with Rutger, Chris Sanchez gives McClaren the information he’s gathered about the Army sending soldiers with PTSD back into battle in Afghanistan.
While Torben turns to Princefield’s CEO with his complaints about Ellen, Michael tells Patty about his meeting with Lyle. And though Patty tells a story that paints her father as a tyrant, Michael still presses her to relinquish control over the Hewes family estate for Catherine’s sake. Meanwhile, as Ellen presses Detectives Williams and Ortiz to order a DNA test on the bloody business card, Chris’s decision to release the incriminating Army files on McClarenTruth puts Channing back in the public eye. And while Herndon warns that the release of the information has rehabilitated McClaren’s public image, Patty refuses to back down and decides to expose Torben’s connection to McClarenTruth and Princefield. Finally, as Patty agrees to be considered for the court nomination, the detectives tell Ellen that the man identified by the DNA test is Patrick Sully, an associate of Uncle Pete’s who is responsible for maintaining Stefania McKee’s care.

As Ellen turns to Chris’ friend Waleed Cooper to help find the hit man she suspects Patty hired to kill her, Chris’ revelation that the military was sending brain-damaged soldiers back into battle in Afghanistan thrusts whistle-blower Channing McClaren and McClarenTruth back into the limelight. And after Ellen warns him that concealing his involvement with insider trading at Princefield Investments could come back to haunt them during the trial, McClaren moneyman Helmut Torben looks to calm Princefield’s worried CEO Bennett Herreshoff about the extent of their exposure. Meanwhile, as Patty asks to wrap up her depositions so that the trial can get underway, hit man Patrick Scully stalks Ellen as she prepares her courtroom presentation.
While Ellen is focusing on the upcoming trial, her mother, Denise, calls to say that her estranged husband, Gary, is pressuring her to return home. Summoning Gary to her office, Ellen insists that he leave her mother alone. However, when he shows up at her apartment demanding to see his wife, Ellen has to threaten him with a gun. During her depositions, Patty rattles McClaren aide Rutger Simon with questions about how much he knew about Torben’s involvement with Herreshoff. When Rutger then turns around and offers to implicate both Torben and Herreshoff in exchange for her backing off McClarenTruth, Patty demands that he first deliver his boss, Channing McClaren. But when Channing suspects he’s being sold out, he fires Rutger, claiming he can run the organization without him.
With his and the organization’s future in jeopardy, Rutger returns to tell Patty about Channing’s role in the leak that led Naomi Walling to commit suicide. But before he’ll testify against his boss, Rutger insists that Patty guarantee that McClarenTruth will continue with him in charge. Finally, with Waleed’s help, Ellen heads off Scully’s next strike. And after Ellen threatens to kill the hit man if he refuses to reveal who hired him, Patty makes it clear that she had nothing to do with the attempt on her life.
