Dr. Simon Stringer:
“Artificial intelligence is set to transform many industrial sectors this century. Even given the limitations of existing AI techniques compared to the human brain, we will see the continued rise of automation in the three major areas of manufacturing, social care and defence. The future markets for AI technologies as well as the societal impact will be immense. Business leaders need to understand the technologies, including their strengths and weaknesses, and where they may be potentially applied. This is not easy since engineers, themselves, often need to experiment by trial and error in order to discover the capabilities of their methods. Nevertheless, we are at the beginning of a huge expansion of AI in everyday life. Consequently, we will continue to see large numbers of job losses as companies and public sector bodies introduce efficiencies through automation. How should government policy respond? Our national education & training programmes must adapt to ensure future workforces have appropriate digital employment skills. For this, we need to try to assess the future AI landscape now.”
