At Ros’s funeral, Section D are left asking themselves how much a person must sacrifice to be a spy. Harry is determined to exact revenge on ex-ally and former Home Secretary Nicholas Blake and even reconsider his own commitment to the service. One month later and the team are back, tracking Somalian AQ terrorist Abib on a boat from Tangier. Lucas is undercover with keen SBS agent Dimitri Levendis (who masquerades as the ship’s ‘Captain’) while the rest of the team track from the Grid. The boat is stormed and the crew killed by an Al Qaeda cell who have loaded the boat with explosives and other unknown vessels, but how will the team stop the floating bomb when the hijackers have turned off the GPS? When an Eastern European ‘prostitute’ saves Lucas’s life and kills two of the cell, it’s clear there’s more to her than meets the eye – this is Beth Bailey, a mercenary also hired to track Abib. Although Lucas takes an instant dislike to her ‘cash for kicks’ background, they must escape to get help before the boat reaches its target. Dimitri, left to man the ship alone, quickly realises that they may have underestimated Abib’s plan...

Beth’s thrown in at the deep end on her first op with Section D when she goes undercover as an oil trader at a secret meeting of Britain’s top oil dealers. The Team have received intel that an assassination attempt will be made on influential oil baron Robert Westhouse, and Beth’s objective is to protect him. The oil executives take the lift to the Penthouse meeting when it suddenly stops and is showered with bullets and it seems the attempt on Westhouse’s life has been made. Beth quickly realises that the gunmen were from her murky mercenary past and out for revenge for a mistake she made a long time ago but she is determined to keep this from the Team. She tells Lucas and Harry that she saw and heard nothing, as does the only other survivor, Jacob Chapman. When Ruth realises that the real assassin was in the lift and killed in the shooting, she knows that something doesn’t add up. Beth’s assassins show their determination and track her down. Chapman helps Beth get rid of the problem, and tries to tempt her into escaping back to a life of blood and money.

When Russia accuses the Azakstan Freedom Front of murdering ethnic Russians and invades the ex-Soviet State in a move reminiscent of historical oppression, Towers bans members of the AFF from Britain’s shores. This obvious ploy to curry favour with Britain’s new ‘ally’, Russia, is much to Harry’s distaste. Lucas and Viktor – an FSB officer – are sent to Azakstan, surveilled by the Grid to destroy the last known sample of the outlawed nerve agent Paroxocybin. They succeed in destroying the sample, but when the AFF men and woman are mercilessly killed by the Russian agents, Lucas and Harry are disgusted. Harry makes a controversial decision when he sees one of the AFF men, Aibek, ‘escaping’ and deliberately allows him to run.

A highly skilled trio of Chinese officers arrive in London, they’re here for 48 hours and Section D must discover what it is they’ve come for and why. Beth has been grooming an asset, Kai, from inside the Chinese Security Services and, determined to prove herself useful to the op, she activates him to help find out the snatch team’s aims. But is he ready? The Team must infiltrate Chinese security, which is world-renowned for being impenetrable, to discover what is so important that they are here in London to repatriate. Ruth goes undercover at a research facility called QMK and discovers that the Chinese have come for a woman, Jiang Lee, a scientist who has developed a desalinisation technique worth billions and whom Britain ‘poached’. This intellectual property is key to the UK and the US – in an atmosphere of economic degradation, these advances keep the UK at the top table.

The President is on his way to London to chair top secret peace talks between Israel and Palestine, under the guise of his first state visit. Hopes are high for an agreement: He’s the toughest President in years and the Home Secretary tasks Section D with keeping the talks on track. Beth and Dimitri must keep their wits about them as they go undercover as Home Office liaison officers to keep the sensitive delegates apart – Dimitri will look after the Israelis and Beth the Palestinians. But when a journalist threatens to publish the story it’s clear someone somewhere is trying to jeopardise the talks. Ruth stops the journalist, but the Team must find the source of the leak. Tariq traces calls made to the journalist via Lebanon and a flat in London, where Lucas finds maps and plans of the hotel. It looks like they’ve found a base of operations for an assassination attempt – someone wants to kill the President. When Hutri, a Lebanese paramilitary, turns up at the flat, it looks like they’ve found their man and Lucas makes chase, but Hutri escapes after nearly strangling Lucas.

MI5 are thrown into a cyberterrorism nightmare when an American Predator drone on loan to the UK in Afghanistan is hacked by the Taliban and turned on a US army camp, killing American soldiers. Relations between the CIA and MI5 are stretched to say the least and Beecher – head of the CIA in London – arrives on the Grid to oversee installation of the US’s advanced cybersecurity system ‘Cybershell’ to stop any future disasters. Lucas, out in the field, is tasked with protecting and delivering to the Grid Daniella Ortiz, the young ex-hacker turned White House cryptographer who holds the installation codes.

Ruth is approached out of the blue by an odd figure from the council, Keith Deery. Deery is an official council snooper, but is determined that he has found a dead drop ‘message’ under a park bench in the shape of a letter containing the words ‘Jet’ and ‘Archon’. Ruth feels some sensitivity for the man’s plight, as her own unhappy memories resurface when she receives a letter about the house she shared with George and a photo of little Nico in Greece. But Deery’s four failed applications to MI5 and suspected mental imbalance due to the loss of his wife lead Dimitri to strongly advise Ruth to take the wannabe’s intel with a pinch of salt. When Deery accosts Ruth again telling her that the girl who ‘dead dropped’ has disappeared, Ruth is harsher and point blank turns him away. However, when she looks more carefully at the letter she starts to think that maybe he’s on to something – this doesn’t look like fake intel. Dimitri tells her to follow her instincts and check him out – he can’t go with her as he’s got to intercept a Mafia leader who’s been found on a boat on the Thames.

The Team face their toughest challenge ever: tracking down Lucas North, their Section Chief, friend and one of the best agents MI5 has ever seen. But it’s not going to be easy to find a man who has nothing left to lose, and Lucas is all too familiar with how to use London’s labyrinth; he just keeps slipping through their fingers. Harry decides that Section D are too close to the case and decides to bring in a specialist, Alec White. Alec is a sardonic, philandering, alcoholic, ex-Internal Affairs specialist. He’s brilliant and gets straight to the heart of the matter: Lucas must still be in London for a reason, and it’s not just the Albany file. Albany is just his key to getting the bigger prize. If they can work out how his real mind works, they’ll get him. Harry and Lucas must play on each other’s weaknesses if they are to out-manoeuvre each other, but the collateral fall-Lucas takes that which is most precious to Harry, who is then faced with a choice between moral obligation and his heart.
