Are you a slow-mo company or can you keep pace with the speed of business?

Fast-moving world. Pace of change. Disrupt or be disrupted. You know the drill. You hear the groans.

Urgently-worded business-world banter flies fast and furious across column miles of business and technology journalism, executive summaries and white papers. To what end? To create a feeling of panic and fear of failure, no doubt.

Then there’s the mythological, moralistic and biblical analogies that can lead to questions and confusion. What does the David and Goliath story really mean? I’m not that handy with a slingshot, so maybe I’m not cut out to be a David? And surely, no matter what Aesop said, it’s got to be better to be the hare?

And breathe…

Size doesn’t matter. Fast companies out-compete slow companies

At last, a remark from an industry commentator that cuts through the clutter and clichés more pertinently than most. Ulrik Newhammer, former chief executive of Coca-Cola Germany and now senior vice president at Salesforce recently said, “In the past, it was bigger companies that out-competed smaller companies – I think that is history. Today the fast companies out-compete the slow companies.”

It’s refreshing, revitalising and gets right to the point. It sounds like good news. It suggests that the way companies compete is changing. Businesses might even dare to dream that if they can turn on a sixpence or a dime, they’ll soon be coining it. Enough of that waffle. What businesses need to do is be constantly looking for and finding the competitive advantage, without disrupting their daily operations. When they see an opportunity, they must be able to rethink their direction and make the necessary operational changes very quickly.
