Sonny Hammond is a Park Ranger. After an accident involving a dangerous helicopter rescue, he is sent to work in the city. He and his twin children Jerry and Louise (Lou) are unhappy at being cut off from the bush and most of all from their wonderful kangaroo Skippy. Skippy disappears from her usual bush haunts, pining for her lost family. Two of the Hammonds’ friends mount a search for her - Kate the vet, and Thel McGee, proprietor of Habitat, a small animal-based tourist attraction near the National Park. Kate and Thel, however, decide that only the Hammond twins can help in the search. Skippy is found by Jerry and Lou, Sonny becomes a partner in Habitat, and the Hammonds are off to a new life.

A lonely and unhappy boy wanders into the Hammond twins’ lives. But he’s not only lonely - he’s a menace. Clever with electronics, he makes the lives of Lou and her friends a misery by rigging up fake spiders powered by batteries, and spins Jerry tales that an old mill near the Hammonds’ place is haunted. He also talks Jerry into sneaking out after dark to see the ‘ghost’. Jerry is in dead trouble when Sonny discovers this. Then Lou makes a discovery too - the ‘ghost’ is actually a series of mechanical and electrical tricks rigged up in the mill. She turns the tables on the boy who did it by taking him unawares with his own devices. It’s also made her realise how smart he is, and she! asks him to rig up something special for the local Halloween celebrations.

Bird smuggling is a serious crime in Australia, and when it comes home to Habitat, it takes the combined efforts of the twins, Sonny, and Ranger Dave to prevent it. There are two men involved - one would do anything for the ‘big bucks’, and the other is a local who provides a boat to get the birds down river to a ship waiting to take them overseas. Skippy, Lou and Jerry combine to release the men’s original prey, and the criminals get the desperate idea of stealing the collection of native birds out of the aviary at Habitat. But when there are no bird calls to wake the Hammonds and Thel next morning, they are all immediately on to the case, and quick action sees the criminals caught on the jetty at Habitat, with Ranger Dave on hand, and the men’s boat drifting helplessly in the middle of the river, with a little help from Skippy releasing the rope that tethers it. Here’s one lot of birds that will never leave Australia!

Lou and the teenager Chris go to Gorman’s Park to get proof that the flashy entrepreneur is mistreating his animals. Jerry, with the instinct that comes from him and Lou being twins, gets the same idea and turns up there as well. One of Wally World’s security guards catches them all and Gorman uses the threat of prosecution to try and blackmail them into selling Habitat to him. The security guard however is sym!pathetic to the kids and gives them photographic evidence that they need to expose Gorman’s misdeeds and to get his threatening hands off Habitat. Skippy and her friends triumph when Gorman is taken in on animal cruelty charges, and Chris decides to move on.

Lou does well in a school science project that involves throwing the voice by simple electronics. But her cleverness backfires when she attaches the device to Skippy’s collar and plays tricks on the local storekeeper, Jack. It looks as though Skippy is actually saying the wor!ds, and two genial no-hopers, Alec and Bill, overhear the trick and think they’ve found a talking kangaroo! They’ll make millions!! They steal our heroine, and Lou and Jerry, aided by Tyke, a little terrier who hangs around the store, have to give chase to get their favourite back.

When a wealthy boy moves into the Hammonds’ neighbourhood, Jerry is entranced by the boy’s possessions - his video games, all the gear in his room at home and most of all by his trailbike. Forbidden by Ranger Dave to ride the bike in the National Park, the two boys defy authority. Jerry loves the speed and energy of riding the bike. Skippy, however, disapproves, and when Chris skittles a wombat with the bike, Jerry sees the error of his ways. To Jerry’s great relief, the wombat finally lives, and Jerry says ‘no more’! But the unrepentant wealthy boy is rounded up by Ranger Dav!e on another biking expedition to the National Park.

Is there a fox killing the birds at Habitat? It looks like it, and Sonny and Dave investigate. Meantime, Skippy gets a fright - she has always been mates with Buster, the dog belonging to Lou’s best friend, Elyse. But Buster is suddenly snarling at Skippy, and no-one knows why. There’s another unhappy dog in the neighbourhood too - Honey, who is owned by a council worker. At the episode’s end, a sad truth has to be faced. Buster is the culprit with the birds - he has a brain tumour which is driving him mad with pain. That explains his behaviour, but he cannot be saved and he has to be put down. Elyse is very upset. But there’s a hopeful ending in sight - Honey is grumpy because she’s pregnant, and when her pups are born, Elyse ends up accepting one of them to replace Buster. Life is a cycle, after all!

A travelling Snake Show is doing a season at Habitat. Part of the program is a volunteer from the audience holding the snakes. In fact, the ‘volunteer’ is the daughter of the man and woman who run the show, and is slightly older than Lou and Jerry. Lou thinks the girl is wonderful, and wants to get friendly with the visitor, but the girls rejects Lou’s offer because the family never settles and she always gets taken away from her friends. Finally, she runs away on a very hot day, and is in danger of dehydration in the bush before she is found by a search party. Skippy points the searchers in her direction. She is reconciled with her parents’ lifestyle, and Lou points out that you can stay friends by writing to one another. And the two girls do.

Lou is discontented when Thel won’t let her row across the river to the fish markets. And she causes trouble for everyone when she takes Thel’s dinghy and gets into dangerous currents in the middle of the river. Skippy alerts the father of Lou’s friend Elyse, who is a fisherman. He saves Lou but wrenches his shoulder and can’t take his boat out. Elyse and Lou get the idea that if they spend the day out in the boat catching fish they’ll make it up to him. But who will help them? The answer is Elyse’s scrawny 14 year-old brother Kenny. Kenny wants to follow in his father’s footsteps, but his father doesn’t think he’s suited to the hard life of a fisherman. Jerry raises the alarm when he! realizes the boat is gone, and a search follows. However Kenny and the two girls turn up trumps. They come back safely with a load of fish in spite of the fears of the adults and Skippy.

The Hammond Family get a surprise when a musical Japanese/Australian girl, Tamiko, is billeted with them during an orchestra tour. For who would have thought that Thel, whose brother died in the Pacific war nearly fifty years ago, still harboured a grudge against the Japanese and that it would come out in dislike of the young visitor? When Lou takes a tumble on a cliff, it is only Tamiko’s strong fingers, trained to play the violin, that can hold on to Lou while Jerry, Skippy and Thel come to the rescue. Thel revises her opinion of our Asian neighbours.

Jerry is having trouble getting up the courage to dive off the high board at the swimming pool. But his life is not all problems. ‘Uncle’ Jerry King is coming to visit. The guy is young Jerry’s hero - for one thing, Jerry was named after him, and for another, he has fabulous adventures flying helicopters all over the world. But ‘Uncle’ Jerry has lost his nerve, and when Kate, Sonny and Skippy are trapped in a vehicle teetering on the edge of a cliff, it takes the younger Jerry to bolster the older Jerry’s confidence so that the! two Jerrys take a helicopter in and save them. And guess who helps Jerry Hammond with his problem on the big diving board? The two Jerrys are a great combination.

A child model comes to Habitat to shoot a commercial with Skippy for ‘Jack Horner Jams’, one in a series featuring the girl and different animals. Although charming to Skippy on the surface, she takes every opportunity to be secretly cruel to her co-star. Why? Lou and Jerry discover that she is really a vulnerable child trapped into a contract she hates by a greedy agent and uncaring advertising executives. The children cheekily come to her aid with the help of a number of their friends, and cleverly convince the advertising men that Miss Jack Horner holds no appeal for their target audience of! children. The contract is cancelled, a grateful Miss Horner returns to her family and Skippy finds herself the solo star of the commercial. But Skippy is not about to put her paw to any contract!
Skippy and the Runaway

Lou and Skippy find evidence of animal traps in the National Park near Habitat. Somebody is living in the park, and that’s not allowed. But Lou’s desire to catch the wrongdoer turns to sympathy when she meets him - 13 year-old Jim, who has been unhappy on his parents’ farm because he feels that his parents look on him as the dumb one of his family. He has an older brother and sister who are academically smarter and who are pursuing careers in the city. But Kim’s story has a reassuring turn in it. In spite of Lou’s attempts to hide him, he is found by Ranger Dave, and sent back to his family. And to his surprise his Dad welcomes him home because he’s the o!nly one in the family who’d like to run the farm - the others don’t want to know about it. Jim, no longer a runaway, is reunited with his parents.

Kate’s grandfather Bill is a born-again greenie who runs a small farm up river from Habitat. He’s a crusty but lovable old man, and when some fish die in the river near his place, he stages a one-man demonstration at the local paper mill, for polluting the river. However, Skippy, Lou and Jerry discover otherwise. Granddad was not always environmentally sound on his farm, and he himself is causing the pollution of the river - he has some old drums of pesticide stored in a shed and they have been leaking into the river and fouling it. The twins and Granddad learn that in the environment war, everyone must take care of his or her own little corner of the world.

Glen is a boy who wants to be a stuntman. But Glen’s got it all wrong. He’s overweight, and is only using his embryonic knowledge of stunting (falling on cardboard boxes and the like) to draw attention to himself. Then Glen discovers he has a real talent - animals take to him. Skippy likes him, and he proves to be good with horses. Kate is glad of his ability because she’s been sent a horse that hates everybody. It’s been mistreated, and Glen is the only one who manages to ha!ndle it. With the help of everyone at Habitat, including Skippy, both Glen and the horse start to reform. The episode features the Wild West Show from Warners’ Movieworld.

On a dare, Jerry sneaks into a bush tree house where there lives a man who is mad at today’s modern civilisation. He’s guarding a colony of koalas and has let the stories about him spread in order to protect his beloved furry friends. Instead of hunting the kids away, Jerry talks him into showing them the koalas at school, and the kids are impressed. But one of them is impressed in the wrong way. He sneaks off to the old man’s camp and tries to steal a koala, but he falls and hurts himself. In trying to attract attention to his plight, he accidentally lights a bushfire. It’s only with seconds to go that Jerry, Lou, Kate and Thel manage to whip the koalas out of the path of the bushfire, and Sonny and Dave save the fallen boy. While the old man is getting his life together again, he !agrees to show his koalas at Habitat as he showed them to the kids at school, and the crowds are delighted.

Lou and Jerry are baffled by a new girl who moves into the neighbourhood. Why does she stay home all the time? And why does her father forbid her to visit Habitat? It’s because she is in a wheelchair, the result of a tragic accident in which her mother was killed. Our twins and Skippy succeed in taking the girl to visit their animals, and she defies her father by trying to join the Hammonds on a picnic at the local waterhole. But her wheel chair gets out of control on a bush track. She overturns and is nearly drowned in a creek full of rapids. Skippy alerts Lou and Jerry, and Jerry’s swimming skills save the day. And what could be more natural than that Jerry should offer to teach the girl to swim? Her! father, overcoming his objections, is amazed and delighted.

Jerry is fired up with enthusiasm for cross country running, and he is disappointed when his chief rival Brendan cheats in a race and Jerry loses. Meanwhile, Easter is approaching, and an egg hunt is organized at Habitat for the local littlies. Who will have to get dressed up as the Easter Bunny? Jerry at first refuses, but then agrees because it’s for the Wildlife Fund. Then Skippy discovered the lengths Brendan will go to to win the cross country - th!e boy has stretched a rope across the bush track where Jerry trains, meaning to put his rival out of commission. Lou videotapes evidence of this and the tape also accidentally records the fact that it’s not Brendan who’s fanatical about the cross country - it’s his father who’s the keen one, and who’s pushing him to compete. Jerry helps Brendan face his father, and in return Brendan agrees to be the Easter bunny.

The Pirates are a boys’ gang. When they won’t let Jerry in, he forms his own gang, the Buccaneers. Meanwhile, Ranger Dave realizes that the Pirates’ noisy activity is driving animals away from a waterhole in the National Park. The boys have got to be stopped. Jerry’s gang is just bad as the Pirates. Lou is upset with Jerry because she’s not allowed to join the new gang on sexist grounds and Skippy is only acceptable as a ‘ship’s mascot’. Then war develops between the Pirates and the B!uccaneers over possession of the waterhole. Dave and Sonny floating under a mocked up ‘crocodile’ put the wind up both the unruly gangs and Dave offers the kids the opportunity to from a band of Junior Rangers to protect the environment rather than destroying it.

Lou and Jerry are mad keen to join the Nippers, the Junior Surf Lifesavers. But Lou’s swimming is not quite up to scratch, and everyone has to make a concerted effort to help her train. Then things go badly. A less-than-friendly beach inspector hunts Skippy off the beach, and shortly afterwards, Lou is caught in a real-life rescue situation and freezes, helpless. She’s heartbroken, feeling that she is a failure. Jerry offers to pretend to be drowning so she can save him and feel better, a plan that Sonny vetos very quickly. However, Jerry runs into real trouble in the surf trying to save someone’s dog, and this time Lou meets the challenge. She rescues her brother with Skippy’s help. And the beach inspector and the Surf Lifesaving movement are proud of them all.

Jerry is obsessed with getting money for a bike. When vandals attack some of the local primary schools, he stakes out a school in the hope of collecting the reward money. Rather than catching the vandals, however, he scares them off at a time when a security guard would in fact have nabbed them. Although the confusion that Jerry is a vandal himself is soon cleared up, Jerry feels that he’s let everyone down. The situation is saved when Skippy notices the vandals lurking roun!d the local amateur art show, in which Thel is a competitor. Skip alerts everyone to their intentions to destroy the entries, and Sonny and the family return to the hall in time to capture the vandals and save the paintings. Thel’s entry goes on to win, and a contrite Jerry is surprised to find that Thel has used part of the prize money to buy him his much desired bike.

A balloon is tethered at Habitat as a tourist attraction, while Skippy and the Hammonds have guests - Lou’s friend Tamiko and a Japanese boy who is staying with Tamiko’s family. The Japanese boy is discovered to be the heir to t!he great Nakamura electronics family, sent to Australia to improve his English and find out how ordinary employees of the company live. When his father comes to take him back to Japan, he cuts himself adrift in the balloon, declaring that he wants to stay in Australia. Only timely intervention by Skippy and a concerted effort by everyone else gets him safely back to earth and reunited with his father.
Skippy and the Roos

The Roos are Jerry’s soccer team. Kate is their trainer, Skippy is their mascot, and Lou videos their games for discussion after practice. In mid season, however, Thel and Sonny, the supports of all this activity, are laid low with flu. Lou tries getting the meals, but she’s a woeful cook and it’s Jerry who turns out to be a natural in the kitchen. When his team mates get wind of this, however, they rag him because ‘cooking is for girls’. The members of the hottest opposition team latch on and taunt Jerry on the field. In a burst of macho spirit, Jerry punches out an opponent and is sent off. The game is lost and there’ll be no finals for the Roos this year. But everyone has learnt a less!on about male and female roles and team spirit, and there’s always next season...
Skippy and the Beach Bullies

It’s winter and the kids enjoy going to the beach and watching the surfers ride the big waves. Two bullies, Josh and Sam, decide the beach is theirs and start picking on the smaller children. Assisted by Skippy, Jerry and Lou get the better of the bullies until Josh calls on his big brother for help. For a while the surfers believe that Skippy is the one who has been menacing the children and are going to report her to the police. Kate’s brother, Simon, is able to get both the attention and respect of the surfers by riding the biggest wave of the year, and once they listen to him he is able to show them what really happened.

Kate’s nephew Sean has come to Habitat for a visit. He is primarily a city kid and unhappy in the bush. He is even less pleased when he discovers that he has to go and spend some time with his Granddad Bill who he thinks is a bit of a nut. Jerry and Lou let him take Skippy along as a companion. When they arrive at Granddad Bill’s, Kate and Sean are greeted with the sight of Bill being chased across a field by a huge bull. Granddad says it’s the crazy lady next door and her kids that have put the bull onto him. At first Sean thinks it’s just another of Granddad’s stories, but he soon discovers that there are four small children living on the next door farm who have been abandoned by their parents. When they are found out the children fear they will all be split up and put into foster homes, and they decide to take their friend the bull and try to run away to the city. They soon get into trouble in the bush. Sean and Skippy find them, and with the help of Granddad Bill a happy resolution is found.
Skippy and the Marsupial

While playing on a home made flying fox, Lou gets !a hard bump on the head when she collides with a young girl who seemingly ignored Jerry’s warning and ran into Lou’s path. The young girl runs off, and in a half daze, Lou thinks that she has seen an almost extinct wallaby in the bush. Jerry didn’t see the animal, being more concerned with the mysterious girl who just ran off. Back at Habitat the mystery of the girl is solved when it is found out she is Bridget, the daughter of a visiting researcher who has been profoundly deaf since birth. The kids quickly make friends with Bridget and enjoy learning sign language. While there is some doubt that Lou really saw the wallaby, the adults decide to look just in case. After upsetting their search, Lou, Bridget and Jerry go off on their own, and Lou gets into trouble, eventually needing to be rescued by Ranger Dave and the helicopter. In the end, Lou and Skippy are the only ones who know for certain that the wallaby was really there.
Skippy and the Pretenders

Pretending you are something you are not can get you into trouble. Derek, an asthmatic boy from the city comes to Habitat for a weekend visit. He hates telling other kids that he has asthma, because they always treat him differently when they find out. Lou, meanwhile, has her heart set on going to a party that is being given by the most popular girl in the school. She convinces Sonny to let her get a new dress that is completely different from what she would normally buy. Derek and Jerry go off camping and Lou goes to her party. Lou comes home early upset because the girls hated her dress and made fun of her all day. She decides to join the boys on their camping trip. Derek is almost discovered by Jerry using his inhaler, and to avoid detection, throws it into the bush where it goes down a snake hole. Shortly after Lou finds the boys Derek has an attack and tells the kids what he has done. W!ith Skippy’s help they find where the inhaler is and are able to retrieve it when Lou bravely puts her hand into the hole. That night at the campfire, both Lou and Derek decide they have both been foolish trying to pretend they are someone they aren’t.
Skippy and the Rivals

Sibling rivalry is a part of growing up, but when Jerry and Lou find out that the prize for coming first in the Junior Ranger’s competition is a trip to Perth, they pull out all stops in an effort to be the winner. To the detriment of their school work, their chores around Habitat, and even their friends, they both strive to be the one who ends up with the most points at the end of the competition. When it is time for the winner to be announced, everyone is sure that it will be either Jerry or Lou. But then Ranger Dave tells the kids that the purpose of the contest was more than just getting the most points. The purpose of the contest was to find the one who best u!nderstood what it means to be a Junior Ranger, the one who showed the best understanding of their environment, and how to get along in it and with other people. Elyse Hamilton is the winner, and Jerry and Lou learn that pushing your way to the front of the line does not necessarily make you a winner.

While spending a few days with Thel at her fishing shack, Jerry and Lou run into Grumpy Johnson an old man who owns the property across the river from Thel’s and has felt for forty years that his family was cheated out of their land by Thel’s grandfather. Grumpy has always been a bit of a con man, or Flim Flammer, as Thel calls him, and is in the process of teaching his grandson, Brett, how to fleece unsuspecting strangers. He almost gets his revenge when Brett wins both Jerry’s bicycle and Skippy from him in a game of poker. Jerry is heartbroken, but eventually Lou comes up with a way to turn the t!ables on Grumpy and Brett, and both the bicycle and Skippy are returned safely.
Skippy and the Skipathon

When the water main at Habitat bursts, Jerry and Lou find out first hand what it is like to live without running water. They find out at school that there are lots of people who have never had running water, and decide to make a project out of raising enough money to buy a water pump for a poor African village. The project is soon reduced into a contest between the boys and the girls. The boys want to get sponsors for skating on their roller blades, the girls want to get sponsors for the amount of time they can skip rope. Eventually, when roller blades are banned from Habitat they unite in a Skipathon, but rivalry continues and they decide to find out if the boys or girls can go the longest without water during the contest. When one of the boys collapses with early signs of dehydration the contest is called off, and it is !only with the help of a generous patron that the village gets its pump and the children see the virtue of working together.
Skippy and the Tiger

Joe Flood, an old friend of Thel’s, brings his small and less than prosperous circus to Habitat. Its main attraction is Sinbad the tiger. After one of the shows Sonny finds a young boy named Christopher pretending to shoot the animals and people with a real rifle that he has taken from a cupboard at home. Christopher likes to pretend that he is on safari, and can see no harm in playing with a real gun. Sonny quickly puts him right. He takes him home to his mother, and Christopher watches through a keyhole as his mother locks away the rifle. The next day the circus packs up and leaves and Lou heads off to the National Park to do a science project. The truck carrying Sinbad has an accident and the tiger escapes into the park. Christopher hears about it on television, retrieves the rifle! and bullets and goes off to be a hero. In the park he panics when he comes face to face with the tiger. He drops the gun which discharges, wounding Sinbad. Lou and Skippy come on the wounded tiger and Skippy is able to draw Sinbad away from Lou while she goes for help. Kate is able to immobilise the tiger with a tranquilliser gun and he is taken back to Habitat for treatment. Sinbad recovers, the publicity does Joe’s circus the world of good and Christopher has learned his lesson about pretending to be a great white hunter.
Skippy and the Orchid

Many people may find the study of orchids a boring subject, but when it is presented by Jerry and Lou’s grandmother, Eleanor, it becomes absolutely fascinating. Eleanor travels the world searching out the rarest and most beautiful of orchids. She is in Australia to find a seldom seen species that grows entirely underground. She recruits Lou as her assistant and together they head off to the national park. Eleanor has trained a small pig to sniff out the orchids, but unfortunately has not bothered to get a permit to take the animal into the park. Ranger Dave has to confiscate the small porker, and for a while it seems that the orchid will not be found. Then Jerry gets the idea that Skipp!y can help and together they find a specimen, only to lose it again. Jerry and Tim have been stealing golf balls from the fairways of a local golf course. When they are found out, they are given the punishment of weeding the gardens to pay for the value of the balls they ‘borrowed’. Brad, the junior pro at the course, decides to teach them what golf is all about. Both Jerry and Tim beco!me fascinated with the game. Tim is a natural, and starts skipping school to spend more time playing golf. Tim encourages him by telling him he once did the same thing, and that he’s going to show his teachers that an education isn’t important by winning millions of dollars playing golf. Jerry covers for Tim at school, and tries to convince him to return. But when Tim does show up, he pretends that he is ill and the teacher sends him home again. Skippy follows him to the golf course, and even though there is a thunderstorm coming, he and Brad decide to play a round anyway. Lightning hits a tree near them and Brad is badly hurt. For a while it looks like he will never play golf again. He tells Jerry that until the accident he has never realised that because of his lack of education, without golf he has nothing. Both Tim and Brad decide that school may have its place after all.

Unknown to the Hammonds Skippy decides to hop into the boat when the family goes water skiing. At a service station Skippy is left behind, but eventually finds her way to the river where Sonny and the kids are skiing. Expensive houses line the river, and when the electric gate of one opens, Skippy hops through. Miranda, the young girl who lives in the house, takes a liking to Skippy and wants to keep her. Even though he can see that Skippy is obviously someone’s pet, her recently divorced father cannot resist his daughter’s request. When Jerry and Lou find Skippy is gone they are frantic. Eventually they trace her to the rich girl’s house, but through the influence of his wealth, Miranda’s father has acquired a permit to keep Skippy. Jerry and Lou use a small outboard to get to the pier at Miranda’s house, and when they call her, Skippy quickly hops into the boat and the children take her back to Habitat thinking that all is well. But Miranda’s father arrives with a court order deman!ding the return of Skippy and it is only when Miranda can see the strong bond between Skippy and the twins that she tells her rather that Habitat is where Skippy really belongs.

Life at Habitat is disrupted when the famous wildlife film maker, Greg O’Neil, comes to Habitat to film the mating dance of the Cape Barren Goose. He turns Kate into a researcher, the vet’s surgery into a production office and the children into unpaid assistants. Worse, Sonny sees there seems to be more than just friendship between Greg and Kate. While he is trying to get the cruise boat ‘Habitat Trader!ote ready for the tourists, everyone else is preoccupied with film making. When Lou tells Sonny that she thinks Greg is going to ask Kate to marry him, he tries to have a word with her but is continually interrupted by Greg. Thel is stung by an insect and is feeling a bit under the weather and on the day of the filming, Lou decides to stay at Habitat to keep her company. When Thel decides to take a nap Lou decides to do some work on the boat. The motor that is precariously supported slips, trapping Lou’s foot and punching a hole in the bottom of the boat. Skippy tries to get Thel but she has taken some medicine and will not wake up. Skippy then goes to where the film crew is about to film the mating dance and hops in between the birds, scattering them into the bush. Realising something is wrong, Sonny and Kate follow Skippy back to Habitat where they are able to rescue Lou. Kate reveals that Greg has asked her to work with him not marry him but there is going to be a wedding.
