Michael and K.I.T.T.'s search for three million dollars in stolen diamonds leads them to the Monk's Cellar Winery. Michael, Bonnie and Devon are in the Van Decker Auctioneers building overseeing the sale of a Foundation benefactor's estate, the money of which will go to charity. As the beauteous Jody Tompkins models the diamonds, Charley Winters and Lyle Austin enter wearing motorcycle helmets, robbing Van Decker of the diamonds. Michael and K.I.T.T. take pursuit yet lose the motorcyclists. While visiting Jody, Michael receives a call from Devon explaining that Charley Winters shot Lyle Austin and took all the jewels. Michael and K.I.T.T. find the wounded Lyle...and discover a plane ticket to Napa.

Soon freed, John takes it for a ride in awe of its high-tech computer technology. Michael and K.I.T.T. are horrified to discover that K.A.R.R. is operational as they thought it was destroyed some time ago. K.A.R.R. is a Foundation reject!

Michael and K.I.T.T. go western when they descend upon Sage City to help Rebecca Hammond stop the cattle rustling on her ranch. A child psychologist, Rebecca works with old-timer Cat Holliday. In town, Michael gets a cool reception from the Sheriff and from Big Ed (who owns most of Sage City). He informs them of the rustling incident, and they in turn tell him that they do not want the problem children Rebecca is bringing into town. Michael confirms with Rebecca that she is busing "The Rotten Apples," several misfits and abused children, from New York City to live and work on the ranch.

Michael is framed with heroin possession and suspended from the Foundation. He confronts a big-time underworld figure in New Orleans, Boyd Lasalle, asking him to clear up the situation. Instead, Michael discovers that the Foundation has now fired him and Lasalle offers him $50,000 to steal K.I.T.T.. Michael kidnaps K.I.T.T. and returns with the car in the middle of a birthday party for Linda, Lasalle's girlfriend. The second phase of Lasalle's plan is that Michael obtains a key to the world's most secure lock – which is in Devon's safe.

Michael and K.I.T.T.'s assignment is to track down a group of evil men who are in the business of making poisonous substances and are planning to sell them to terrorists. Following an informant's tip to the Foundation, Michael and K.I.T.T. have a meeting place at Venice Beach under surveillance. They are observing two men exchanging a huge payment in cash. When the transfer of metal canisters filled with poisonous gas is in progress, Michael and K.I.T.T. spring into action. Michael confronts the driver of one of the vans who draws out a small canister much like a Mace gun from his pocket and aims it at Michael!

Two men wearing ski masks manage to pull a daring daylight robbery and steal several packages of a newly-developed, powerful explosive from a guarded trailer. Michael and K.I.T.T. must find the two men who committed the robbery. One thousand pounds of the new XPL nitro-plastique dynamite was stolen and Michael and K.I.T.T. are in hot pursuit. The chase soon ends when one of the robbers throws packets of the explosives at them causing power wires to break and envelop K.I.T.T. The wires cause a voltage surge which shorts out K.I.T.T. and leaves Michael badly shaken.

Michael poses as a mercenary to track down the elusive Chameleon, a master of disguise, who stole sophisticated government weapons with the intention of selling them to the highest bidder. On the way to a District Court appearance, the Chameleon, alias Gordon Baxter, is able to overpower the guard even though they are hand-cuffed together. With the guard's gun, Baxter forces Judge Edith Webster to give him her robe, then with a latex mask, the judge's robe and some make-up he is able to slip out of the courthouse. He commandeers a dry-cleaner's van, and the man with the thousand faces and voices is free again! It is Michael's assignment to track him down.

He is a loan shark who has his hands in the garment industry, "helping" designers who have little or no cash but good ideas.

The day before the big race, Maxine "Max" Fleming is training her beautiful thorough-bred when the animal collapses from under her, and the local veterinarian must shoot it. Max is inconsolable in her pain and disappointment, and she appreciates Michael's offer to help. He soon finds evidence that the horse had been drugged, and he suspects that it is alive and well and hidden somewhere.

Fran, a wildlife photographer, is trying to prove that industrialist Birock disposes of his chemical waste in an illegal manner, destroying everything that is alive around him. Every time she is about to prove to the authorities Birock's wrong-doing, a fire would break out and burn all the evidence. Michael and K.I.T.T. pay Birock a visit which ends up in complete disaster when K.I.T.T. is dropped into an acid-filled pit by a monstrous junkyard dog.

Michael and K.I.T.T. are asked to help the hard-working employees of a limousine manufacturing company to buy out the firm which is on the verge of going bankrupt. Melanie "Mel" Mitchell asks Michael and K.I.T.T. for help when it is quite evident that an important international sale of their limousine, which could have saved their company, is sabotaged by the initial owners. Armorbuilt Carriage Works manufactures special limousines equipped and designed to withstand terrorist attacks. While two potential clients are being taken for a test drive in one of the limos, the vehicle is hit by a missile which destroys the car. The sale is obviously a fiasco, and Michael finds out that the proprietors of the firm were to blame.

When Devon sends Michael and K.I.T.T. on an unofficial security investigation for one of the Foundation's clients, clues lead to an international criminal who attempts to detonate an almost completed high-rise. Macroplex Incorporated is one of the nation's most advanced think tanks with contracts from the Pentagon. Just recently one of their technicians, Kevin Morgan, had been accused of theft, and now it is reported that he fell to his death from the roof of the corporation's almost completed high-rise. When Michael goes to see Janet Morgan, Kevin's widow, she tells him that she is convinced that it was murder – not an accident, and Michael believes her.

Jamie Downs barely escapes serious injuries when her four-wheel drive vehicle is forced off the road and rolls down a steep embankment. Jamie is sponsoring the local racing event, and she is convinced that the attempt on her life has something to do with it. Michael arrives in Marberry – a quiet, peaceful retirement community suddenly taken over by fast cars and rock'n'roll music. Jamie receives another threatening call at her house while Michael is having dinner with her. Shortly thereafter, Jamie's truck explodes in a blinding flash. Apparently, someone is willing to kill her to stop the race, but why and who?

While Thomas Raymond is fishing, and his daughter Ali is taking pictures of him, Dr. Raymond is suddenly attacked by two men wearing hawk masks. Raymond is barely able to tell Ali to run away. A short time later, he dies from the injuries received in the attack. The two men were able to remove a black crystal Dr. Raymond had embedded in his belt buckle. Michael pays Ali Raymond a visit to find out why Dr. Raymond had contacted the Foundation to ask for assistance.

Phil and Joe come flying out of a restaurant, where their argument has escalated into a bad fight. Phil tried to explain to his friend that the only reason he no longer works for the Independents is because the pressure became too much, and his main concern is supporting his family. A man in the back of the on-looking crowd has witnessed all the commotion and gets on the phone with Shatner to report what he had just seen. Shatner's goal is to squeeze the independents out to the point of breaking them, giving him complete control over the trucking system he wants.

When blackmail turns into the murder of a close friend of Bonnie Barstow, Michael poses as a scientist to gain entrance to an exclusive retreat where the owner is dealing in top-secret weapons. Bonnie has just received the news that her good friend, Harley Freeman, a brilliant computer scientist, was killed in a car accident. Freeman had been one of Bonnie's professors at M.I.T., and it had developed into a very good friendship. It was reported that Freeman's car had crashed into a power pole, and one of the wires had electrocuted him. Indications were that he had been drinking pretty heavily, but as long as Bonnie knew him, he only had an occasional glass of wine at dinner.

Devon has made arrangements for Michael to check into the Dune Drifter Resort. Michael suspects that Devon's intentions are more than just rest and relaxation, and he is right. Police Captain Tom O'Malley is supposed to be registered there, and he is the only contact so far that links the Foundation's investigation to a stolen truckload of confiscated arms, including laser guns. Apparently, O'Malley's signature was on the pass issued by the police.

Devon, Bonnie, Michael and K.I.T.T. have just arrived on the circus grounds in a small town where the workers and performers are getting ready for the opening. Devon and the founder of Circus Major were in the service in France during the war. Gunther Major's two children, Peter and Terry, are the star attractions of the circus. While Peter is doing a triple somersault on the trapeze, he seems to lose his balance. He misses the catcher's hands and plummets to his death. Devon has the nagging feeling that it was not an accident and asks Michael and K.I.T.T. to join the circus to find out who killed Peter and the person behind the scheme to have the circus go bankrupt.
