Connected cars drive IoT innovation at Hannover Messe 2015

HMI

Excitement is building here at Microsoft and across the manufacturing community with Hannover Messe 2015 (the world’s largest exposition for Industrial and Automation IT) right around the corner on April 13-17, in Hannover, Germany.

The introduction of the Internet of Things (IoT) and services is ushering in a fourth industrial revolution coined Industry 4.0, and will be the main themes of this year’s fair. With all of this build-up, we’re looking forward to the wide range of innovations that will be on display from around the globe.

And since digitization is at the heart of IoT and Industry 4.0, you can expect that Microsoft is planning a smashing show of its own, with a range of exhibits from partners and customers that span product innovation, sales &marketing, operations, and connected assets and appliances.

Let me just provide you with a sample of what we’re showcasing in the connected car area at Hannover Messe:

quoros2

As this blog is being written, a brand new Qoros car is making the journey to Hannover, where it will be used to demonstrate the innovative features of QorosQloud, a rich suite of connected services that is the brain of all Qoros vehicles, transforming any car into a smart and mobile object. It integrates deeply with social networks to cater to today’s digital customer. On top, it enables the connection to traffic, parking, personalized navigation, as well as car conditions and online maintenance booking.

delphi

We’ll also show the innovative Delphi Connect solution from Delphi Automotive, based on Microsoft Azure. Using IoT capabilities, Delphi Connect makes intelligent cars available to a broad set of consumers, technology that once was only reserved for higher end, more expensive cars. A plug-and-play onboard diagnostic module gives consumers amazing capabilities and insight into their cars, such as location tracking, service alerts, driver behavior monitoring, and key fob emulation using a smart device, among other features.

Microsoft’s own machine learning applications for the connected car will be on display. Our engineering & data scientists in the Strategic Engagements team at Microsoft have developed a world-class driver scoring system that processes telemetry data from the vehicle, driver behavior, ambient conditions, traffic environment and a host of other variables, and uses machine learning to compute a driver score. This is the fundamental ingredient for usage-based insurance and actuarial calculations for insurance companies. Fleet managers can use it to improve safety, vehicle and driver performance, and fuel efficiency.

The application can also monitor the performance of a host of subsystems and components across millions of vehicles, alerting OEMs to patterns of defects as they emerge enabling proactive response. They can manage their service and warranty processes more efficiently on a global basis. And we’ll show how machine learning is applied to learn traffic patterns enabling users to see the ebb and flow of traffic based on the route and time of day. Range calculations is one of the critical functions necessary to manage routes and recommend charge points for electric vehicles. And public services or fleet managers can use their predictions to choose routes that optimize their travel time or fuel efficiency.

And these are just are just a few of the amazing examples we’ll be showing off at Hannover Messe. To see even more exciting showcases, visit us in person at our booth, located in Digital Factory Hall 7, Booth C48. You’ll be treated to engaging demonstrations, rich content, plenary sessions, executive briefings, giveaways, and more. I also encourage you to schedule time to meet with Microsoft executives to discuss your transformational journey to a connected and digital enterprise.
