Today, I am excited to share that agentic capabilities in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are now generally available. Copilot can take multi-step, app-native actions directly in your documents, worksheets, and presentations—helping you move from first draft to final output faster, while you stay in control.
This new default experience is already proving more useful in real work. Early customer feedback shows stronger engagement and higher satisfaction, reinforcing the value of Copilot as a true collaborator that helps get work done.
What we learned along the way
When we first shipped Copilot, foundation models were not powerful enough to use Copilot to command the applications. This meant Copilot was a passive partner in documents: it could answer questions but missed the mark when it was asked to take action on the canvas directly. Over the past year, models have made meaningful leaps in instruction following, reasoning, and overall quality, and are now better at handling multi-step edits reliably without losing your intent.
All of these advances have enabled Copilot to fully engage with each application as a true collaborator: understanding the richness of a pivot table in Excel, the use of animations in PowerPoint, or the precision of citations in Word. This agentic evolution of Copilot within Word, Excel, and PowerPoint feels magical, as it can now take on high-level tasks and execute them like a human would.
We’ve built this new functionality in close partnership with customers and researchers across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and a few themes stood out:
- Taking action matters. Copilot creates the most value when it performs the work—formatting, restructuring, building visuals, and transforming data—rather than just suggesting steps.
- Control is non-negotiable. People need to be able to review changes, keep what they want, and stay confident that their preferences about structure, style, and brand are respected.
- Better context improves output. Work IQ grounds Copilot in your work signals, so it understands intent faster and produces higher quality content and analysis.
- Multi-model matters. Different models deliver unique value. Copilot brings the best innovation from across the industry, tuned for work and tailored to your business needs, so you can pick the right model for the job, regardless of who built it.
- Consistency across apps builds confidence. As you move between Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, the entry point and interaction model need to feel familiar, while still honoring what makes each app unique.
Over the last month, our data already shows increased engagement, retention, and satisfaction:
| Application | Change in Engagement (tries/user per week) | Change in new user retention (% increase) | Change in Satisfaction (thumbs up rate) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Word | +52% | +11% | +21% |
| Excel | +67% | +50% | +65% |
| PowerPoint | +11% | +36% | +25% |

What’s next
As always, we are committed to continuously improving Copilot in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Next, we’re focused on three things:
- Deeper, more reliable editing for complex workflows. Expanding the set of native actions Copilot can take while continuously improving quality and correctness—especially for complex, high-stakes work like finance spreadsheets and legal documents.
- More transparency and control. Making it easier to preview changes, understand what was changed and why, and fine-tune outcomes without losing your place.
- A more seamless Copilot system. Bringing together entry points, suggestions, and in-app workflows so Copilot feels consistent and integrated across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint—and increasingly proactive in helping you move work forward.
