Billy the Kid is probably the most misunderstood historical figure of the Old West. He was not a cold-blooded killer, nor was he a robber of trains or banks. Instead, he was a gunfighter in a feud between two factions who killed and stole from each other. Although his life was short, Billy’s legend survived and grew long after his death. A famous outlaw by age of 15, Billy grew up in a lawless and violent world, but he could read and do math, was gentle and kind, respectful to women, as well as being tough, brave and remarkably charismatic. He tried to treat all men as equal but in melting pots like New Mexico there was constant conflict between the many groups and factions of every color and creed that claimed a right to be there.
