As she turns 35, schoolteacher Rachel Cameron (Joanne Woodward) realizes she is at the exact middle of her lonely, uninteresting life. Repressed and self-conscious, Rachel yearns for her share of life. Taking small, brave steps she tries things she has shunned for years--attending a revival meeting, and allowing herself to fall in love.
