Naruto becomes restless, as he complains that “these types of missions are not gonna make me stronger..” But soon after, he learns that outsiders are gradually arriving in Leaf Village. They are individuals, chosen as representatives of each village to participate in the “Chunin Exam.”

The Leaf Village decides to choose representatives of their own for the Chunin Qualification Exam. Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura are among those who are chosen to take the examination. But Iruka vehemently opposes the participation of Naruto and his team. He argues that the members are too young and lack the adequate level of experience and skills for the challenge. There are rookie teams in the test that already passed it once before and refined their skills since then. Iruka understands very well that passing the test will not be easy for the three. He questions Kakashi, who recommended the three for the test, if he is willing to jeopardize the young ninja’ potential while they are still not ready for the test. But Kakashi believes clearly that they have grown and are more than ready.

As Sasuke struggles with Lee’s maneuvers, he at last realizes the opponent’s strength lies in his Taijutsu ability.

Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura officially register for the Chunin Exam. In this exam, three ninja form a team and in order to pass, not a single member is allowed to fail. Teamwork becomes absolutely vital for success in this test. When they enter the exam room, there are already many others waiting to take the test. Naruto and his team are almost overwhelmed by the atmosphere, as they encounter many others who are chasing a similar dream. In the room, Naruto meets one of the participants, a ninja named Kabuto Yakushi. He has taken the test many times and even though he kept on failing it, he has collected an expansive record on those who are taking the exam. Naruto’s team takes a look at Kabuto’s information and discovers that those who are taking the test have considerable skills and are elite ninja who carry the honor of their villages.

Naruto and his team begin the first exam, a written paper test. The exam proctor is a special Jonin named Ibiki Morino, who is an infamous expert in interrogation. At the sight of Ibiki, the participants become nervous. Before the start of the exam, he explains the direction of the test: there are ten question in all and answering every question correct would result in ten points, while each wrong answer would lead to a point deduction. The passage or failure of a team will depend on the combined score of the three members, but if there is one individual who answers all of the questions incorrectly, the entire team is eliminated from the competition. Sasuke and Sakura are worried that if Naruto answers all of the questions wrong, they themselves will fail the test. The examination finally begins…
The Tenth Question: All or Nothing!

The first exam tests the intelligence gathering skills of the students. The exam calls for the students to cheat in answering the difficult questions without being caught by the examination officials. The hardest part of the first exam comes in Question 10. Before the ninja start the question, Ibiki declares what seems like a harsh and unreasonable rule for that problem: if this question is answered incorrectly, not only will it result in the failure of the first exam, but the team will be denied the right to take any future Chunin Exams. The consequence of answering wrong means that the path to becoming a Chunin will be taken away forever. Unable to withstand the pressure, many students depart without completing the question. At that moment, Sakura becomes worried that Naruto will be unable to come up with the right answer for the final question…

Naruto and his fellow participants arrive at Forest of Death, the site of the second exam in the Chunin Test. The exam proctor Anko explains that the latest exam will be a survival game. To begin, each team will be given one of two types of scrolls. A team must get the possession of the other type of scroll by stealing it from another team and reach the goal point at the tower with both scrolls in hand. Teams will struggle fiercely over the control of scrolls, it is expected there will even be some fatalities in this test. As the exam begins, Anko offers only one piece of advice to the participants – “Don’t Get Killed!”
