Detective Cyrus Lupo (Jeremy Sisto) leaves terrorist regions to return to his own family terror at home. After four years abroad, Detective Lupo (Sisto) returns to the United States to find his brother committed suicide by lethal injection because of his incurable illness. Before the case is closed, another man is found dead, having killed himself in an identical fashion. Lieutenant Van Buren (S. Epatha Merkerson) permits Lupo to work the case alongside fellow Detective Ed Green (Jesse L. Martin). Lupo and Green are suspicious of a recent parolee formerly known as “Dr. Death,” and through further investigation they are inclined to believe “Dr. Death’s” daughter (guest star Marin Ireland) could be a follower of her father’s work. When a Caucasian teenage boy and young African American girl are found dead near a neighborhood playground, Detectives Cyrus Lupo (Jeremy Sisto) and Ed Green (Jesse L. Martin) have trouble getting witnesses to talk after realizing the boy was targeted and the girl was killed accidentally. Two brothers and friends of the murdered boy, Andy (guest star Jeremy Allen White) and Josh Steel (guest star Miles Chandler), lead the detectives to a local kid Will Manning (guest star Tristan Wilds). Ultimately, it’s Will’s father Ray Manning (guest star Kevin Carroll) who admits to being the shooter. Ray’s defense is that he feared for his son’s life when he saw three boys chasing Will with baseball bats. This new information leads the detectives to suspect the Steel brothers and their overly aggressive mother, Gretchen (guest star Ally Walker). When three roommates are found dead in their apartment, Detectives Ed Green (Jesse L. Martin and Cyrus Lupo’s (Jeremy Sisto) initial examination of the crime scene suggests a murder-suicide amongst jealous lovers. This notion is quickly dismissed when the detectives discover one of the victims, Todd Stewart (guest star Jonathan Sale) an environmental attorney, had a closeted relationship with a prominent political figure. After the politician’s fingerprints don’t match the prints on the murder weapon the investigation shifts focus to Victor Vargas, a political fundraiser who gave the detectives their first lead. When Vargas’ address turns out to be bogus and then a little background research uncovers a past of illegal activities including fraud, the detectives realize they’ve got their guy. Evidence rules out the con artists who scammed Burns as suspects, but a hotel surveillance tape shows a man with a southern accent vehemently knocking on the door looking for a different physician, Dr. Garrison (guest star James Rebhorn). After tracking down the cab driver that picked up Liscomb, new information leads the detectives to a drug-addicted prostitute with an affluent past, known as “Sugar” (guest star Maria Dizzia) and her partner Tito Cabassa (guest star Pedro Pascal). A war of words unfolds as the detectives pit the prostitute and pimp against each other to see who will talk first. The victim’s husband, Bradley Cameron (guest star Daniel London) explains to the detectives that he and his wife were paranoid that members of the cult had been trailing them recently. However, Bradley comes under suspicion as the detectives begin to chip away at his alibi. Automobile mechanic Eric Greenwood is found murdered outside of a bar leading Detectives Cyrus Lupo (Jeremy Sisto) and Kevin Bernard (Anthony Anderson) to question the victim’s boss, Bob Munsen (guest star Barry Del Sherman). Lupo and Bernard discover Munsen was involved in an online relationship that Greenwood had sabotaged. Munsen profited over $60,000 dollars of stolen money, and laundered the money to his young, online lover, "Jenny Cheponis." The case takes some strange twists and turns, as "Jenny" turns out to be an older woman, Donna Cheponis (guest star Melissa Leo), with a missing daughter. Greenwood exposed the online relationship between Munsen and Cheponis and ended up dead, but "Jenny" remains missing.
