The Partridge Family returns home exhausted from a tour only to learn that Reuben has booked them to play the next Saturday... he owes a man a favor. When Shirley hears it is for the Point Loomis Air Force Base, she agrees to do it. The is one hitch, however. The Partridges must back up Stillman Kelly's daughter, Dora, 18 years old and beautiful...but can't sing a note on key. She does a number and each member of the family winces, except Keith, who's hopelessly smitten with her loveliness and her music ability. Later, Shirley tries to explain to Keith that Dora's singing very bad, but he won't believe her. She tells him to listen carefully at the next rehearsal; he is late and misses it. The Partridges simply can't tell her the truth. Keith walks Dora home, and when he returns, they play a tape for him. The singing is so rotten that he quickly turns it off. They break it to him...the voice was Dora's. Shocked, Keith promises he will tell her. He comes back later and tells them instead that he and Dora are going steady. Shirley decides she'll have to tell Stillman. After listening to him describe how he taught his daughter every (wrong) note she knows, Shirley just can't tell him the facts. The Partridges turn on Reuben next...he assures them he will do what he can. On the night of the performance, Dora is introduced. As she comes on stage, a roar of cheers and applause from the servicemen drowns out her song. Dora receives a standing ovation and great reviews in the papers...but she decides she does not want to pursue a musical career, much to the relief of everyone.

Reuben comes up with the idea for a contest - the Booper Beat Magazine Contest - in which the winner would spend a week with the Partridge Family. Keith is hoping the winner would be young and beautiful. Reuben comes up with Gloria Neugast, the winner of the contest...a 60-year-old Jewish mother. In no time at all, Mrs. Neugahst is cleaning the house, mowing the lawn, helping the kids with their homework and teaching Laurie how to knit. She even talks Keith into taking her to Muldoon's Point where he takes his girlfriends - and his friends drive up and tease him mercilessly. When Mrs. Neugast brings home a nice single Jewish doctor for Shirley...the family decides to that they can't take any more of it. But they don't want to hurt her feelings. During a recording session, Mrs. Neugast interrupts each time the Partridges are about to begin. She tells Keith his hair is out of place...then stops the session again to tell Shirley the sheet music is blocking her face. They finally finish, but after 73 takes! On the day she is to leave, Mrs. Neugast feigns illness, and Shirley decides to let her stay a few more days. Reuben comes up with the perfect solution - he finds her a hob with a child daycare center so that she can worry about many people. She is delighted and leaves immediately. A week later, a letter arrives from Mrs. Neugast...and the Partridge family realizes she is not out of their lives. She tells Tracy to stop biting her nails, Keith to dress nicely...and she tells Shirley she has arranged another date for her with the nice Jewish doctor.

In a hippie fan magazine interview, Keith has blabbed too much about the family, unsettling all of them, especially Laurie. He has said she had a crush on a Harry Murphy, but Laurie insists it was a Butch Murphy and it was years ago. A motorcycle roars outside, the bell rings and the door is opened to reveal a burly young man in Levis, dirty white T-shirt, boots, and with an earring in one ear. He announces he is Harry "Snake" Murphy and is looking for the chick who is crazy about him. When Laurie explains the mistake, Snake laughs and admits he came on a dare. If Laurie will give him her autograph - on his bare chest - he will shove off. Reuben comes in carrying a twisted wire lawn-flamingo which he says some idiot had run over with a motorcycle, but when he spots Snake he drops that line and gushes about the beautiful machine he had seen on the front lawn. In the following weeks, Snake roars his motorbike right in and out of Laurie's life. She refuses to talk with him, but during a rehearsal of the family's latest number, "Listen to the Sound," Shirley sees that Laurie's mind is far, far away and suggests she and Snake should have a talk. Laurie returns from the talk saying Snake is very sensitive, has written a poem about her, and she has invited him to the school prom. An uneasy family watches Laurie and Snake leave for the dance. Snake has abandoned his usual weird outfit and is wearing normal clothes, but they are obviously far out-dated and no longer fit. When the couple returns to a still apprehensive family, they are a bit disheveled. Snake has been taunted by two varsity football players and has licked them both, but one of his stray punches floored Laurie. However, they have decided their two worlds do not mix. He gives Laurie his earring, and they call it quits. Several weeks later, a package arrives for Laurie. It contains an almost new wire lawn-flamingo and a sweetish poem that, among other things, warns Laurie that the flamingo is "hot."

Shirley is accepted to a class in psychology in college, and she learns that Paul Bruner, a freshman in her class, has a crush on her. On the first day of school, Paul comes by the Partridge Family house to ask Shirley for a ride to a lecture given the following night in connection with their class. Paul anticipates an amorous episode to take place en route and quite unexpectedly, the car does run out of gas on the way home. The family teases Shirley mercilessly for using such an old trick and Paul's parents pay a serious visit to look into the supposed romance between their son and Shirley. Their visit alerts Shirley to the fact of Paul's attachment to her. With the help of Mr. and Mrs. Bruner, Shirley decides to end the romance with a special dinner for Paul. That night, Paul rings the doorbell to find Keith Partridge greeting him...much to his astonishment. He is introduced to all the other members of the family and finally realizes that he is in the midst of the famous Partridge Family - and - Shirley is the mother of the group. The situation is greatly improved, however, when Laurie enters the room. Paul's face lights up as he meets another female Partridge - one much closer to his age. After dinner, Paul bribes Danny with 25 cents to leave the room so he can be alone.

Keith, Laurie, Danny, and Reuben are playing croquet when Shirley brings them some lemonade. Danny takes a sip and makes a face...says he has a slight sore throat. Shirley looks at his throat and takes him right to the doctor, who tells Danny that he must have his tonsils removed. The doctor and Shirley assure Danny that the operation is very simple. At home, the family acts very nice to him and even lets him choose the dinner that night. Danny's friend, Punky Lazaar, comes over and tells Danny that he had his tonsils out and that it was the most harrowing experience of his life...and Danny believes him. Shirley tells Danny again that it is a simple operation and he has nothing to worry about. Danny starts to watch TV and on Marcus Welby, M.D., he hears the doctor talking to a woman on the phone. Dr. Welby asks her if she has told her son the truth...and she says she would feel better if her son thinks the operation is just a simple one. That does it for Danny! He relates the TV program to his life and is certain he will die from the operation. He runs an ad in the paper for a red-headed boy to take his place in the group, and when it is time to go to the hospital, he says goodbye to each member of his family and to each room of the house. He even wills them his few possessions. When Danny wakes up after the operation, he is amazed to find himself among the living. However, he tries to tape his singing voice two days after he comes home and is convinced he can no longer sing. The family has to trick him into rehearsal...they get Punky to wear a red wig and Danny's outfit and they tell Danny they have terrific replacement for him. Danny is too competitive to let that go by...he is his old self once again.

Danny comes up with an idea for crashing in on the ecology movement...the Partridges should get a whale to be their lead singer. He had just played Laurie's new record, "Song of the Humpback Whale." Laurie explains that whales are becoming extinct and she doesn't want to profit from their plight, but Danny doesn't understand. He puts an ad in the paper for a singing whale, and loads of people show up with their animals - a dancing bear, singing dog, chimp - but no whale. The Partridges go to Marineland and talk to Dr. Whelander, who agrees that they should make a record to allow people to become aware of the plight of the whales so that maybe they'll do something to stop them form being slaughtered. He said that any profits Marineland receives will go to the New York Zoological Society, where they are working to save whales. Shirley says that her family will devote her profits to the whale too. At the recording session, E.J. Flicker walks in and claims the whale belongs to him since he was the one who alerted Marineland four years ago to get the whale out of his inlet. He wants 50 percent. Shirley gets an idea - they will cut the record at Marineland and invite the press and Mr. Flicker. She sets everything up with Mr. Blanchard of ABC News, who shames Flicker in front of thousands of people into donating his 50 percent to the Zoological Society.

After getting some unsolicited advice from his school coach, Keith decides to accept the responsibility of being the eldest male in the family. He feels he should take care of his younger brothers and sisters. Unfortunately for the kids, Keith gives them an educational and cultural whirl that includes a classical music concert in the park and the Bolshoi Ballet. The kids have no time left for plain old fun. Fed up with the whole situation, Danny initiates a 'get back at Keith' drive. The kids start laying all their problems - real and imaginary - at Keith's door. The pressure finally gets to Keith when Danny asks him to explain the 'facts of life.' Keith realizes that the burden is too much for him - he has no time left to do his homework. Later on, Keith overhears the children talking about the success of their plan, and he feels very hurt and humiliated. Knowing they have wronged Keith, the kids apologize and all is forgiven.

Wendell is 16 years old, skinny, unsure of himself, and a real klutz. He is a student at Laurie and Keith's school and also delivers groceries to the Partridges. The family suddenly realizes that he has flipped over Laurie, but he is much too shy and awkward to ask her out. Danny goes to the store where Wendell works and asks him if he'd like to have a date with Laurie. He drags Wendell back to the house and recruits Keith to give him a few lessons concerning girls. Both Partridge boys take Wendell into the house and hold him there until he finally stammers out an invitation for Friday night. Laurie accepts. Later, the Partridge Family realizes that they will be doing a concert in Phoenix Friday night, so Laurie has the difficult job of breaking her date. Meanwhile, Wendell has gained such confidence from her acceptance that it is doubly hard for her. She tells him and he immediately slips back to his former self...stumbling and clumsy. Laurie wants to make it up to him the next week, but Wendell avoids her and the other members of the family. Finally, Laurie goes to the store and tells him she would like him to take her to the football party that Saturday night. Once again, he is overwhelmed. The evening goes beautifully, and Wendell is eating it up. Everyone pays attention to him, even the girls, and he is full of pride and confidence. It is the greatest evening of his life. The following day he wants to see Laurie, and she is afraid he will ask her to go steady. Instead - much to her surprise - he tells her they are too young to get serious and he would like to take out other girls (even those who are not "nice" girls). Shirley tells her family the latest...Wendell has asked her out for Friday night.

With 67 cents worth of backing from Chris and Tracy, plus his own savings, Danny's newest investment is hamsters. Shirley reluctantly agrees, seeing the hamsters as a good experience in responsibility for Chris, Tracy, and Danny. In a matter of weeks the house is full of hamsters. Danny, of course, is overjoyed at the prosperous results of his investment. When the family departs for a tour, no one can be found to "hamster sit," so they are packed into the bus. After a series of mishaps - due entirely to Danny's "investment" - Shirley decides the hamsters must go. She finally convinces the kids that it's not fair to the hamsters, as it is impossible to love that many pets. They see the wisdom in her decision and Danny (with Shirley's help) tries to find homes for the constantly growing number of hamsters. Much to Shirley's dismay no one wants to relieve the Partridge family of their private population explosion. Finally, Danny comes up with a great idea - a free hamster with every purchase of a Partridge Family Album! The family spends an afternoon at the neighborhood department store handing out hamsters, and the problem is solved.

Shirley's dad visits the Partridge family at one o'clock in the morning and surprises them with the announcement that he and Grandma have split up. Grandpa plans to stay the night before leaving for Big Sur, but he is also surprised when Grandam arrives on the scene. It's a youth versus old age confrontation between them. Grandpa wants to be "with it" and Grandma is content to live a more quiet life. It's up to the Partridge Family to get things patched up, and it isn't easy. Not only are Grandma and Grandpa difficult to live with when they aren't speaking to each other, but the Partridges have a club date and can't leave until the folks are back together. Plans for a reconcilement backfire and Grandpa leaves to hitchhike to Big Sur. The Partridges set out to look for him on the road and on the way to their club date. Despite the fact that they pick him up in quite a disheveled state, Grandpa is determined to continue to Big Sur. He is convinced to delay his trip and stay for the club date. Grandma and Grandpa are tricked into sitting at the same table and the Partridges get them back together musically. With their differences set aside, Grandma and Grandpa leave for Big Sur together.

When Shirley favorably comments on a mink coat, Danny decides to buy it for her birthday. Discovering that the girls in school are anxious for Keith Partridge souvenirs, Danny enlists Chris' aid, and they start collecting a variety of Keith's belongings to sell. These are to help pay for Shirley's mink coat. After a few weeks of constantly losing things, Keith thinks he is going crazy. The final blow comes when Danny and Chris wait until Keith is asleep and cut off a large patch of his hair. Shirley puts two and two together and she and the family interrupt Danny and give back all the money and return the balance of Keith's possessions. This partly results in Shirley receiving a mink rabbit's foot for her birthday instead of a mink coat.

Reuben brings the schedule for the Partridge Family summer tour and Shirley does not like the prospect of driving for two months. They decide to hire a driver. Most of the people who answer the ad are lousy drivers...until Johnny Burnhardt comes along. He helps them fix the bus and then is interviewed by the family. They tell him he's hired. Danny brings to notice that Johnny is doing some strange things on the road. He makes lots of phone calls, looking around to see that no one is watching. Then he runs into a guy he knows at a gas station and takes money from him. Danny suspects that he is a floating bookie. One day, while Danny is spying...behind his glasses and false nose...he learns that Johnny is having coffee with the local parole officer. Danny tells Shirley who then confronts Johnny. Johnny admits that he is on parole for armed robbery and he must check in with the parole officer in every city. The following day, Danny picks up a newspaper and reads about a bank robbery. The suspect is shown with his back to the camera and wearing the same clothes that Johnny always wears. The Partridges don't know what to do. Danny calls Reuben - interrupts him in his attempt to seduce a girl - and asks him to join them that night. Reuben arrives and goes to the police station in the town to see if the holdup suspect has been apprehended. Because he bears a resemblance to the suspect, the police take one look at him and throw him in jail. Shirley, Johnny and Danny go to the jail to bail Reuben out...and Reuben points an accusing finger at Johnny. But Danny had seen Johnny at the restaurant on the day of the holdup and speaks up as a witness. Reuben is released, but Johnny packs his bags to leave...since no one seems to trust him. The Partridges convince him to stay and they finish the tour without a mishap.

As the Partridge Family is driving home from Las Vegas on Christmas Eve, the bus breaks down. To their dismay, they discover they are in a ghost town in the middle of the desert. Charlie, an old prospector, comes up to them leading his burro. He tells them that there is a garage 12 miles away, but it is closed. Keith and Reuben stay to try and fix the bus, and the rest of the family goes to Charlie's cabin. When Chris and Tracy complain that they will miss Christmas, Charlie tells them a story about the ghost town 100 years ago. In the fantasy, the town is now clean and new and there are many people. Charlie explains that the town had a beautiful, shiny silver bell, which people came for miles to see and which brought Santa Claus to the town each year. Keith becomes the singing Sheriff Swell, Laurie is the school marm and Shirley is saloon mistress Belle. Everything is fine and happy one year until the day before Christmas when Mean Sidney (Reuben) comes to town and steals the bell so that Santa can't find the townspeople. Everyone tries to get the bell away from Mean, but no one can outsmart him. Then, Little the Kid (Danny) rides in on his white horse, and the people are hopeful again. Little and Mean have a card game right up to the stroke of midnight...and Little can't conquer Mean either. However, the people discover that Santa Claus hasn't forgotten them after all...and it was the spirit of Christmas rather than the bell that brought him each year. When Charlie finished, the Partridges said they loved the story and felt much better. Keith came in to say that he was able to fix the bus and the family took off. Meanwhile, Charlie was very lonely...but not for long. The family returned with silver paint to make the bell look like new. They also brought a tree and presents to share their happiness with Charlie.

Reuben and the Partridges stop off for a picnic on the way home as they unwind after several weeks on the road. At the picnic spot they meet Jenny, a free spirit, just traveling around and doing her thing. The Partridges strike up a friendship with Jenny and she goes home with them and stays for a few days. Jenny, however, is really very wealthy and before she hits the road again, she leaves the Partridge family a bank book containing one million dollars! The kids are thrilled with this unexpected windfall, but Shirley is skeptical and wants to return the gift. Shirley calls the police to have them find Jenny. In the meantime, the family is having a hard time handling their new wealth. The Partridges go back to their picnic spot and find Jenny there. They give back the money and return to their normal lifestyle.

Chris and Tracy have left the kitchen in a mess, and Shirley scolds them. Chris suggests to Tracy that they ought to run away...and Shirley says they should wait till the next morning after a good night's sleep. After rehearsal the next day, Chris and Tracy pick up a few prize possessions and announce they are going to run away. Shirley tells them they had better pack a suitcase, as they will need a change of clothes and a jacket for the night. She is convinced they will only get as far as half a block, stop into the neighbor's house for brownies, and come back. However, the kids leave the neighbor's house and go to Reuben's apartment by taxi. There is chaos as Chris lets in a sheepdog, which gives Reuben hives, and Tracy overflows the bubble bath. As Reuben's luck would have it, Bonnie Kleinschmitt shows up that night with a bottle of champagne and plans to stay with Reuben. When she sees the kids, Reuben tells her to give him an hour and they will be gone. She leaves and Reuben starts to play blackjack with them...saying that the losers would go home. Shirley can't wait any longer - she packs a bag and comes over to Rube's pretending that she has decided to run away. She says she is tired of being the ogre and she has no one to take care of. Chris and Tracy feel very bad and tell her that they will come home. Meanwhile, Bonnie Kleinschmitt calls to tell Reuben she is in Seattle because she had to fill in for a stewardess who became ill.

A heated discussion follows when Keith and Laurie see an underground movie. The result is Laurie's challenge to Keith that he couldn't do any better. Keith rises to the occasion and with Danny's financial backing and help, he proceeds to film "The History of The World," starring the Partridge family and featuring Reuben Kincaid as Dolly Madison. The family gets a few good laughs out of the movie and even Reuben likes it. Danny however, sees this limited success as a chance to recoup his investment and make a large profit. Unfortunately, no one wants to see the film, and it looks as though Keith will have to take a loss on the venture because Danny wants to be paid back in any case. Finally, a local theatre owner shows some interest in the film. The Partridges will not allow the uncut version to be seen in public and so, Keith must edit the film. There is not much left after the cutting, and the Partridge family winds up adding a live musical background to a film of the Partridge family waving to the camera.

Keith is envious of his friend Archie, who seems to be enjoying an independent bachelor life with his own apartment and all the trimmings. Naturally, Keith wouldn't mind that kind of life. So, he campaigns for promising to move out of the house saying that he need the solitude to be able to write songs for the group. Shirley's answer is an emphatic NO! Keith persists, and Shirley finally allows him to take a room next door where she can still keep an eye on him. Instead of paying rent, Keith has to do some "light" gardening. Exhausted from the "light" gardening, Keith has no time to enjoy his independence, let alone write songs. However, he doesn't want to admit defeat so soon. With Danny smuggling him peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and clean shirts, Keith manages for a short while. The fun bachelor life eventually gets to Keith, and he admits to Shirley that living alone is not at all what he expected. He is happy to come back home.

Danny is in the doghouse again. He has written a piece about Keith for the local paper and his imagination has gone wild. Needless to say, when Keith finds out he is furious and with good cause - everyone at school is needling him about the article. But Danny apologizes and all is well - until the second installment of the article appears. This time it is Shirley who must suffer the embarrassment of Danny's publicity campaign. The worst part of it is that Shirley, who doesn't want to leave the house, has to appear in public at a concert. The performance turns out to be successful and Shirley is relieved. Danny's punishment is not forgotten, however, as the family takes revenge in a Sunday supplement article. There are many juicy parts including the bit about Danny's "ballet lessons!"

The Partridge family awakens one morning to find they have an unexpected visitor: Nicholas Puskin, or, as he is otherwise known, Puskin the Magnificent. Nicholas is a jack of all trades; master chef, master carpenter, master artist, etc. Nicholas has decided to offer his services to a typical middle-class American family and the Partridges are that lucky family. The family likes Nicholas well enough, but he seems to break just as many things as he fixes. In his sincere desire to be helpful, Nicholas paints the garage door while the Partridges are away on a concert date. It may sound innocent, but Pushkin the Magnificent has painted a scantly clad young lady on the garage door, and although Nicholas is an accomplished artist, the location of the work is a cause for much embarrassment. As it turns out, Nicholas may not be the greatest of carpenters, but he is a recognized artist. The local museum purchases the garage door for a large sum, so Shirley is able to buy a new garage door and Puskin is able to take a vacation with the remaining money.

Keith and Danny walk into the garage to find Shirley and Laurie digging out bedrolls and camping gear. Since Chris and Tracy are spending the weekend with their grandparents, the girls have decided to take off for a weekend of hiking and camping in the wilderness. Neither of them have ever been camping, so Danny and Keith are more than just a little worried. They try talking them out of it, but the girls are determined. Danny calls Reuben, but by the time he gets there, Shirley and Laurie have a 15-minute head start, so the self appointed "rescue squad" decides to follow them. When they get to the woods, they follow the girls at a distance - staying off the path so they won't be seen. That night, Shirley and Laurie relax at their campsite and have dinner while the guys watch. The heroes realize they forgot to bring food and blankets and all the three are scratched, cold, hungry and tired, but they make it through the night. When they wake up the next morning, Shirley and Laurie are already gone. They decide to head back to the bus and Reuben insists on leading the way. After going around in circles most of the day, they realize they're lost and start yelling for help and Shirley and Laurie of all people, come to there rescue.

Danny is in love for the first time...with an 11-year-old girl named Gloria Hickey. He thinks he hates her and constantly hits her with mud balls at first, but his family sees that he has a big crush on her. When Gloria visits the Partridge family to sell them cookies, Danny buys 12 boxes for $1 a piece. After he is teased, Danny runs up to his room and Shirley goes up to talk to him. Danny confesses he gets a yearning whenever he sees Gloria - an overwhelming desire to run up to her and grab her and punch her in the arm. Shirley assures him that he is perfectly normal. Danny wants to ask Gloria to the 6th grade dance and tries to seek advice from Keith and Laurie. He's really afraid to make the move. Just then, Gloria rings the doorbell and Danny dashes away. She has come over to ask a Partridge to the dance...but unfortunately not Danny. It seems she is in love with Keith. Danny learns the truth and makes life miserable for Keith, the "house wrecker." First he kicks Keith in the shins, then puts molasses on his comb, short-sheets his bed and pours corn flakes over him when he sleeps. The next night, Danny sneaks into Keith's room and writes "Danny Loves Gloria" on Keith's chest in indelible ink. Keith has had it! Shirley tries to console Danny and tells him not to be a quitter. Danny decides he'll fight for his girl and bursts in as Keith is just about to refuse Gloria. Danny is aggressive. Keith insults Gloria unintentionally and she runs away hurt. The next day, Gloria returns to tell Danny that she doesn't love Keith after all...and she asks Danny to take her to the dance. Danny is in his glory when his family tries to pump him for details of their date. He tells them it ended with a punch in the arm.

Laurie is humiliated since she has just been elected Miss Dill Pickle. As she is leaving for the ceremony, Marvin - the high school editor who has always been very hostile to Laurie - comes by to pick up the Partridges' gifts for the celebrity auction at school. Marvin teases Laurie about being a pickle and Laurie leaves in anger...telling Danny to give Marvin her brown shoebox with her ballet slippers for the auction. By mistake, Danny gives Marvin her tan shoebox - which just happens to contain her diary. When Laurie finds out she is mortified...and she is convinced Marvin will publish the diary in the school paper. Laurie asks Danny and Keith to get her diary back before Marvin discovers what he has. They arrive too late - Marvin knows what's in the shoebox. Laurie decides she must get it back herself. Recruiting Keith and Danny's aid again, Laurie decides she will break into the building and steal the diary. She has a series of mishaps where she is almost caught by a policeman, where she struggles and climbs through a window only to find the front door open, and where she climbs through an air vent only to come back into the same room...and Keith and Danny look on and laugh. Meanwhile, Marvin drops by the Partridges and Shirley has a talk with him. She learns that Marvin really likes Laurie but doesn't think she could ever like him. He admits that he would never have published her diary - he couldn't even bring himself to read it. He and Shirley go to the school to get it back and there they find the three Partridges hiding under a table. The day is saved and Laurie gets her diary back.

The Partridge family is eagerly anticipating their vacation after finishing a club date in Las Vegas. Reuben would like them to accept the management's offer to appear for another two weeks, but they all refuse. On the way to the hotel, the bus breaks down. They are towed in to Cal Courtney's garage and he gives them the bad news that they will have to spend the night because he doesn't have the part needed to repair the bus. The family is disappointed at having to postpone their vacation, but there is nothing they can do about it so they resolve to make the best of things. Cal's wife, Amanda, is excited and glad to have the famous singing stars staying at her place. She would like to ask them to appear at a fair for the benefit of the local Indian tribe, but she can't get up the courage, and she resorts to deceiving them into staying longer. When it appears that the family will be leaving, Amanda and Cal take the Partridges to the Indian reservation with the result that they volunteer to perform at the fair. The Partridge family had "done something" to help the American Indian to a better life.
Who Is Max Ledbetter, & Why Is He Saying All Those Terrible Things

Reuben's surprise birthday present for Tracy is a retired show business psychic named Max Ledbetter. Max's performance is looked upon by most of the family as just another act, but Keith is quite impressed and asks Max for a prediction about his upcoming basketball game. When the prediction comes true, Danny decides to capitalize on Max's "powers" by getting some investment tips. The next day, Danny and Keith visit Max and tell him they want to make an investment. Max, who now owns a bakery which he is about to lose unless he can pay off the bank note, desperately needs an additional $156 to make the bank payment. So he goes into his "trance routine" and tells the boys that a family disaster is impending unless they can have $156 in his hands by that Friday, which happens to be the day of the next Partridge concert. Danny and Keith try everything - including a kissing booth - to raise the money. They even try asking everyone, Reuben included, for a loan...without telling them why. When everything fails, they pretend, unsuccessfully, to be sick, hoping to avoid the predicted disaster by not showing up for the concert. Finally, Shirley puts the pieces together and finds out the reason for their strange behavior. When Shirley confronts Max, he shamefully admits that he only wanted to borrow the money to save his bakery. So Shirley and the kids decide to help him out by getting him on the bill with them to play their next concert.
