Ultimately, Rita admits she's pregnant and she figures out an efficient way to perform her new job without the extra hours and travel. Meanwhile, Shannon applies for a scholarship to space camp. When shes not accepted, Jay buys Shannon a telescope and sets up their own backyard version of space camp.

Their nightclub experience is miserable but proves to Rita that she's more than happy in her very comfortable routine.

Rita and Jay get the good news that her amnio is normal, but when the doctor offers to tell them the sex of their baby, Rita decides for both herself and Jay that they'd like it to be a surprise until its born. Shannon and Hallie are upset to hear they'll have to share a room when the baby arrives, until Rita suggests Hallie move into their attic. They throw a garage sale to help clear out stuff from the attic, but to Jays dismay Rita accidentally sells a box of his old toys. Patty helps Rita track down the obnoxious boy that bought the box, and sadly Rita uses all her profits to buy the stuff back. Jay inadvertently finds out the sex of their baby when a nurse calls to reschedule an appointment.

Rita and Jays new neighbor keeps them up late with loud music. The next day, armed with cookies, Rita welcomes the neighbor Chuck (Duane Martin) and politely asks him to keep his music turned down. Ritas request is not well-received, and her visit devolves into an insult-flinging match. Later, Patty is excited to introduce Rita to the amazing new bassist she found for the band. Unfortunately, its Chuck, and when he realizes its Ritas band, he storms out. Jay offers his smooth people skills to help persuade Chuck into giving Rita and the band another shot. Jay finally meets this "Chuck" and is shocked to discover hes Jays favorite baseball player Chuck "The Cannon" DeShannon. Star struck Jay enjoys hanging with his idol and denies knowing the "whacked blonde pregnant woman" next door, until Rita stops by and the truth is revealed. Jay finally tells Chuck how disappointed he is in him for not giving Rita a second chance. Chuck is moved by his number one fans speech, and he shows up to jam with the band.

Rita and Jay meet with Shannons teacher Miss Ricker (Jennifer Elise Cox) who informs them that their daughter is gifted and should move to Mercer, a public school which caters to gifted children. After Shannon switches schools, both Rita and Jay are overwhelmed by her difficult homework, her numerous extra-curricular activities and the longer commute. Patty, having been through this with her son, advises them to hire a tutor and warns them that it doesn't get any easier. When Shannon breaks down and says she misses her old school, Rita and Jay feel terrible but are slightly relieved. They confer and decide its best for Shannon to leave Mercer, until Shannon explains that she understands her new schoolwork, but its just harder. Rita tells Shannon how proud she is and encourages her not to give up just because its hard work. Meanwhile, Hallie mopes around the house feeling sorry for herself until Rita suggests she volunteer somewhere to take her mind off not having a boyfriend. Hallie signs up for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer and finds it surprisingly "rewarding."

Rita, inspired by Hallie's burgeoning fashion design talents, plans a runway fashion show fundraiser for Hallie's school. When Rita sees the highly unusual dress Hallie has designed for her runway walk, Rita intervenes and helps Hallie instead design a traditional little black dress. A grateful Hallie designs a sloncho (a peculiar and very colorful poncho with sleeves) for Rita. Hallie asks Rita to wear her sloncho to the fundraiser where it's unfortunately less than well-received. Hallie is hurt and embarrassed until her fashion design teacher, Mr De La Soire (Patrick Bristow) gushes about how much vision and raw talent he sees in Hallie's sloncho. Meanwhile, Jay gets carried away as Shannons cup stacking coach.

Rita is happy when Patty's studious son Mitchell visits from The University of Michigan and persuades Hallie to consider college. Rita and Patty are surprised but supportive when they find out Hallie and Mitchell have begun to date, until Patty suspects Hallie is distracting Mitchell from studies and Rita hears Mitchell has encouraged Hallie to take a year off after high school. Their tension leads to a disastrous audition that puts the band's bowling alley gig in jeopardy. When Hallie goes to a college party without permission, Rita and Patty put their differences aside to track her down.

Rita and Jay begrudgingly attend a fundraiser for Shannons school where they become fast friends with Rob and Mindy Boone (Michael McDonald and Melissa McCarthy), parents of Shannons classmate Brianna. Pattys a bit jealous when Rita and Jay invite all the Boones over for a bbq. Rita and Jay are ecstatic to find parents they get along with who have a daughter Shannon also likes. Just as they begin to envision family vacations together, Shannon bursts their bubble and reveals that she never wants to see Brianna again. They implore Shannon to give Brianna another chance, until they realize what a handful Brianna actually is. In an earnest effort to continue their friendship with the Boones, Rita and Jay decide to discuss Briannas behavior with Mindy and Rob, but their conversation deteriorates into name calling as both sets of parents defend their own child. Meanwhile, Hallie and Kip decide that they are ready to be friends again. When Hallies boyfriend Mitchell cant make it to the school dance, Kip steps in as her date.

A stressed out Rita scrubs down the house and hides all the junk food to prepare for a visit from Marilyn (Swoosie Kurtz), Ritas overly judgmental mother. Marilyn surprises everyone with her new mellow attitude, but Rita isn't buying it. When Marilyn offers to fund Hallies dream to travel around Europe for a year without consulting her parents, Rita and Marilyn get into a huge fight over whats best for Hallie. Jay tries to be the peacemaker by encouraging Marilyn to make amends with Rita. Eventually, Marilyn apologizes to Rita for being so hard on her and confesses she's been going to therapy to work through her issues. Marilyn decides to stay a couple weeks longer to spend more quality time with Rita and the family.

Non-stop bickering between Jay and Marilyn causes Rita to re-consider her trip to Grand Rapids for a Bed & Bath Max management seminar. Eventually, they convince Rita to go by promising to be on their best behavior. As soon as Rita leaves, Jay and Marilyn split Rita's to-do list in half and vow to stay out of each other's way. Unfortunately, they continue to fight and it gets worse when they realize they left the garage open and Rita's guitar is missing. Rita returns and is crushed by the news. She chastises Jay and Marilyn for their childish irresponsible behavior and sends them out to search for her guitar. Ultimately, Chuck comes over with Rita's guitar, which she forgot he was re-stringing for her. Marilyn and Jay are both furious when Rita breaks the news. Rita's is delighted to see them finally agreeing about something and bonding.

Marilyn guilt trips her way into helping Patty plan Rita's baby shower. When it comes time to make arrangements, Marilyn and Patty can't seem to agree on a single idea. In order to keep the peace, Rita secretly takes on party planning duties along with the other responsibilities she's already juggling. But the bickering continues and eventually a fed up Rita decides to cancel the baby shower all together. On the day of what would have been the baby shower, Jay invites a disappointed Rita to the boys' poker night he had planned. Rita is floored when Patty and Marilyn show up to poker night with Rita's friends in tow for a surprise baby shower. Meanwhile, Hallie gets jealous when Kip starts dating Allison, a super smart girl from school, even though Hallie encouraged him to open himself up to new people.

Marilyn (Swoosie Kurtz) offers to look after the girls while Rita and Jay go away for a relaxing weekend. While picking up some last minute munchies for the trip, Jay catches Marilyn holding hands and flirting with a man that isn't her husband. Marilyn insists it isn't a big deal, but begs Jay not to say anything to Rita because she would overact. Not wanting to ruin the weekend, Jay tries to keep mum but eventually Rita gets the truth out of him. Rita confronts Marilyn who admits she was spending time with her old boyfriend because he made her feel special--something Rita's father hasn't done in a long time. Ultimately, Rita encourages her mother to go home and share these feeling with her husband of 40 years. Meanwhile, Kip plans on saving some money for college by teaching Jasper, Rita's adolescent nemesis and neighbor, how to play drums. Kip puts a stop to the lessons when Shannon helps him realize that Jasper is only taking lessons to try to score a date with Hallie.

When Rita's PTA nemesis, Jennifer (Melissa Peterman), shows up at Bed & Bath Max blubbering about being broke and her husband running off with their maid, Rita helps get her a job at the store. Jennifer is somewhat useless so Rita finds herself picking up much of her slack. Rita's frustration mounts when she finds out Jennifer has been manipulating other employees to do her work and has also volunteered to take over for Rita during her maternity leave. When Rita confronts her, Jennifer berates the other employees, admits she is after Rita's job and eventually, Mr. Abir's, too! Unfortunately for Jennifer, Rita pressed the intercom button on a nearby phone, which broadcast Jennifer's whole tirade on the store's speakers. Ultimately, Mr. Abir promotes Jennifer to 'corporate' to save his and Rita's jobs. Meanwhile, Jay hires Kip to help with some work around the house.

Rita and Patty decide to enter a jingle contest for Glickman Family chickens. Meanwhile, Patty reluctantly agrees to let Chuck escort her to her high school reunion to hopefully help make her ex-husband jealous. When Patty and Chuck actually have a great time together, Rita becomes concerned that their fling might have a negative impact on the band. Despite Patty's assurances that nothing will change, when Rita and Patty have creative differences about the jingle, Patty decides to work on her own version with Chuck. Ultimately, Rita and Patty compromise on each of their ideas and they come up with a winning jingle.

Super pregnant Rita’s self-esteem takes a nose dive when she meets Jay’s new gorgeous co-worker, Stephanie (Christine Lakin). Rita gets upset with Jay for not warning her that Stephanie is a knock-out, but Jay assures Rita he only has eyes for his wife. When Rita bumps into Stephanie at Jay’s office, Stephanie innocently reveals how often Jay comes to her with his problems, including his recent concerns about having a 3rd kid. Rita confronts Jay about why he’s been sharing his feelings with Stephanie but not with his wife of 17 years. Jay explains that he’s been protecting Rita from all the things that keep him up at night, but he promises that from now own he’ll talk through his concerns with Rita. Jay is relieved to unload on Rita, but after listening to all of Jay’s issues, Rita begins to lose sleep. Rita gives Jay her blessing to unload the bulk of his concerns on Stephanie. Meanwhile, sparks fly between Hallie and Kip when they go on a double date with Mitchell and Allison.

When Rita and Patty find out that Kips music teacher thinks he should apply to a performing arts high school, they secretly fill out the application for him. Kip is thrilled when Rita and Patty tell him he’s been offered an audition at the school. Hallie is less than thrilled when she realizes it’s a boarding school many hours away. She’s convinced that Rita is trying to ruin her life by sending Kip out of town for their senior year. After Rita and Jay fail to talk any sense into their daughter, Hallie and Kip proclaim that they’re engaged! Hallie eventually admits she’s not ready to get married and that she was just trying to keep Kip from leaving. Rita helps Hallie realize that she shouldn’t stand in the way of Kips dream, and if they are meant to be together, a year apart won’t change that.
