Lucy Knight, a third year medical student, begins her first day in the ER. Although she impresses doctors with her ability to answer medical questions, her attempts to help patients are clumsy. Placed on probation, Ross must report every procedure he needs to perform to Weaver. Meanwhile, a paramedic asks Greene to consider acting as the district medical director for EMS (Emergency Medical Service), a voluntary job. Greene's daughter, Rachel, is living with him for the summer. Corday searches for a new fellowship so she can remain in the United States.

To save rent money, Carter lives in a medical student dormitory as a resident advisor. While visiting Corday at her apartment, Benton meets her father. A child dies after not receiving proper treatment at the scene of a karate accident, prompting Greene to become an unpaid EMS director. Hathaway hires a salaried registered nurse for her clinic.

After the candidate chosen as chief of emergency medicine accepts a job at another facility and Weaver learns the committee is hiring someone else, she resigns as interim chief.

Corday's judgment falters after working for 36 hours without rest. Carter unintentionally hears Lucy's private notes in her palmtop computer and finds out what she really thinks about him.

Benton quickly learns that some of the white folks don't trust an African-American doctor. Through his determination and expertise, Benton slowly gains the respect of most of the townspeople.
