Hao Fang (opens in new tab) is a principal researcher at Microsoft Semantic Machines (opens in new tab), working on building next-generation conversational AI systems. His research interests focus on conversational AI, large language models, and natural language processing. He received his Ph.D. degree from University of Washington, where he led the Sounding Board (opens in new tab) team and won the inaugural Amazon Alexa Prize for building a socialbot that converses with human users on popular topics and recent news. During his Ph.D. study, he also worked on image captioning, low resource neural language modeling, and community reaction analysis in online discussion forums. He was a recipient of 2018 College of Engineering Student Research Award at the University of Washington. He obtained his Master degree from University of Alberta and Bachelor degree from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications.
