Thiago Vallin Spina joined Microsoft Research in 2021 as a Senior Research Software Engineer of the Special Projects group. He began working on Project Peabody (also known as Holoportation™) applied to several domains, such as 3D Telemedicine.
He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Institute of Computing of the University of Campinas in Brazil (2015). His research focuses on Computer Vision and Machine Learning, with a special interest on the creation of fast algorithms using High-Performance Computing techniques.
Before joining Microsoft, Thiago worked on research labs tackling problems in Image Processing and Scientific Visualization, which required processing very large volumetric images (several Gigabytes) for near real-time applications (within seconds).
