About

My name is Wei Chen (陈 卫). I am a Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research Asia (opens in new tab), and the Chair of MSR Asia Theory Center (opens in new tab). I have served as Adjunct or Guest Professors in several universities including Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), and Shenzhen University. I am a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).

My main research interests include social and information networks, online learning, foundations of large language models, algorithmic game theory, distributed computing, and fault tolerance. My research work aims at connecting real-world applications and phenomena with theoretical foundations through mathematical and algorithmic tools. I have served as PC chairs, track chairs, and PC members of the top machine learning, artificial intelligence, data mining, and database conferences,  such as ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, IJCAI, AAAI, KDD, WSDM, WWW, SDM, SIGMOD, ICDE, ASONAM, etc. I am a Standing Committee member of the Technical Committee of Theoretical Computer Science, and a member of the Technical Committee of Big Data, of Chinese Computer Federation.

I have authored or co-authored two monographs on information and influence propagation modeling and algorithms:

I obtained my bachelor and master degrees from the Department of Computer Science and Technology (opens in new tab), Tsinghua University, and my Ph.D degree from the Department of Computer Science (opens in new tab), Cornell University.
