From Multi-Lingual Character Recognition (Printed, on-line and offline handwritten) to Multi-model Biometric Verification and Identification
In this talk, I will briefly introduce the research activities in the center of intelligent document image processing (CIDIP),Tsinghua University (Beijing, China). I will share with your our research experience in Multi-Lingual Character Recognition for over 20 years, and our development experience in a series of THOCR Chinese character (Printed, On-line and Offline handwritten) recognition systems and THOCR Multi-lingual (include Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Tibetan, Uyghur, Kazakh, Kirghiz and Arabic characters etc.) document recognition systems. I will also share with you our recent experience in foraying into Multimodal (including Face, Hand-writer, Signature and Iris) Biometric verification and identification algorithms and systems.
Speaker Details
Prof. Xiaoqing Ding was graduated from Dept. of Electronic Engineering Tsinghua University (Gold Award for Excellent Student) in 1962. She has been a Full Professor in Dept. of Electronic Engineering in Tsinghua University since 1992. She has published more than 300 papers and is the co-author of four books. She served as program committee members and editors for a number of international conferences and journals. Her research interests include Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, Character Recognition, Document Image Analysis and Recognition, Biometric Authentication, Computer Vision and Video Surveillance, etc. She has won numerous Honors and awards, including three Awards of National Scientific and Technical Achievement Awards of China, and the Awards of Best Overall Performing Face Verification Algorithm in the Face Authentication Test FAT2004 on ICPR2004. Prof. Ding is the leader of CIDIP, which is the worldwide leader in Chinese character (Printed, On-line and Offline handwritten) recognition systems and Multi-lingual(include Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Tibetan, Uyghur, Kazakh, Kirghiz and Arabic characters etc.) document recognition systems. The THOCR software developed in CIDIP is powering the OCR engine of Microsoft Office 2003.
Prof. Changsong Liu is an associate professor in the Department of Electronics engineering at Tsinghua University. His fields of interests includes document image processing, image compression, pattern recognition and nature language processing. He has published more than 30 papers. He is an expert in bridging the gap between research and development. He has lead a few software system development projects, such as OCR, online handwriting Chinese character recognition system, form recognition system. Some of the software system he developed has been widely marketed in China, and has been licensed to Microsoft, Scansoft and Samsung.
