Overview of the Science Fiction Museum

Donna Shirley, Director of the new Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame which opened June 18 at the Seattle Center, will give an overview of the museum. SFM is not only an entertaining and instructive museum but is putting together a strong educational program focused on using Science Fiction to increase literacy and an understanding of science, technology and society.

As Director of the Science Fiction Museum, Donna Shirley is responsible for overseeing the development of all museum content, public programming, and education initiatives, including new exhibits, workshops, lectures, concerts and special events.Shirley joins SFM with extensive knowledge of science fiction, working for 32 years as the manager of the Mars Exploration Program at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She was the original leader of the team that built the Sojourner Microrover, which successfully landed on Mars in 1997, and in 2000/2001 was the official spokesperson for the White House Mars Millennium Project, now called “Imagine Mars.” She has received numerous awards including three honorary doctorates from the University of Oklahoma, Mount St. Mary’s College, Los Angeles, and the State University of New York.In 2003 Shirley retired from the University of Oklahoma College of Engineering where she was Assistant Dean and an instructor of Aerospace Mechanical Engineering. Shirley received her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Oklahoma, and a Master of Sciences degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Southern California.She currently resides in Seattle, Wash.
