Total positivity and cluster algebras

This will be a swift and informal introduction to cluster algebras, with hints on their applications to canonical bases and Teichmuller theory. Total positivity serves as the main motivation.
Speaker Details
Sergey Fomin studied in St. Petersburg with Anatoly Vershik. He worked at MIT in 1992-99, thereafter moving to University of Michigan where he holds the Robert M. Thrall Collegiate Chair. He is an editor at the Journal of the AMS, and a member of MSRI’s Scientific Advisory Committee. This talk is a reprise of his invited lecture at ICM 2010.
