President Kalam, who is often referred to as a People’s President, brings with him a multitude of experiences and achievements. He has been a distinguished scientist, advisor to the cabinet, and a leader of people. Born on October15, 1931 at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam specialized in Aeronautical Engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology. As Project Director, he successfully launched SLV-III, thereby helping India become a member of the Space Club. As Chairman of Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) and an eminent scientist, he led a team of 500 scientists to arrive at “Technology Vision 2020” – a unique long-term technology vision for transforming India from a developing nation to a developed nation.

Dr. Kalam has a reputation of being a great thinker and a prolific writer. His books such as ‘Wings of Fire”, “India 2020 – A Vision for the New Millennium”, “Ignited Minds – Unleashing the power within India” have become household names in India and amongst Indian nationals abroad. He is one of the most distinguished scientists from India, with a unique honor of having received honorary doctorates from 30 universities and institutions. Dr. Kalam has been awarded many coveted awards including the Padma Bhushan (1981), the Padma Vibhushan (1990), and India’s highest civilian award – The Bharat Ratna (1997). Dr. Kalam became the 11th president of India on July 25, 2002. He is currently focused on Vision 2020 – an ambitious endeavor to transform India into a knowledge superpower and a developed nation by 2020.
