Threat behavior
When Win32/Bagle.EG@mm is executed it does the following:
Ā
- Creates a folder named 'hidn' in the %User Profile%\Application Data\ folder.Ā On Windows XP, this defaults to C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\.
- Copies itself to the 'hidn' folder with the filename m_hidn.exe and runs itself from the new location.
- Writes the file m_hook.sys to the 'hidn' folder.Ā This file is detected as Trojan:Win32/Borkle.A.
- Uses the m_hook.sys driver to hide its process, folder and files from the user.
- Uses the m_hook.sys driver to delete a large number of AV programs if they are accessed.
- Adds m_hidn.exe to the startup registry key by writing the value named drv_st_key to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
- Deletes the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot to prevent safe mode from working.
- When run for the first time, Win32/Bagle.EG@mm creates a DWORD value named 'FirstRun' under registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\FirstRuxzx and sets its value to 1.Ā It also creates the file c:\error.gif (which contains a graphic image of the word 'Error') and shows this image to the user.
- Attempts to download files from a long list of URLs and execute any program it manages to download.Ā It downloads these files as %System Folder\re_file.exe.
- Win32/Bagle.EG@mm creates the file c:\temp.zip which is a password-protected ZIP file containing the virus as well as a fake DLL.Ā All filenames within the zip file are randomly generated other than the file extensions (the virus extension is .exe and the fake DLL is .dll).Ā It also generates a .gif image of the password used to unzip this file.
Ā
Win32/Bagle.EG@mm harvests email addresses from various files on the infected computer and attempts to send mail to the harvested addresses.Ā The emails include two attachments, the first is the gif image of the password of the zip file, and the other is the zip file itself.Ā The gif filename is randomly generated (examples below).Ā The email includes a line of text telling the recipient to use the password to unzip the file (the gif image is shown inline with the text).Ā Examples of this text are:
Zip password:Ā <img src="cid:hswnzbcqzl.gif">
UseĀ passwordĀ <img src="cid:kyndqtwrve.gif"> to open archive.
PasswordĀ -- <img src="cid:tjhwzsfmzb.gif">
Password isĀ <img src="cid:fqzpvwcarh.gif">
Password:Ā <imgĀ src="cid:dsbyhytkhx.gif">
archive password: <imgĀ src="cid:ugiarrymac.gif">
Ā
The password on the zip file makes it difficult for virus scanners to detect the contents of the zip file before it has been unzipped.
Ā
The zip attachment and message subject are both chosen at random from a long list of names, as follows:
