System Center Data Protection Manager Public Beta Released

We have just announced the public beta of System Center Data Protection Manager 2006.  If you have heard about Disk-Based backup and recovery and want to see for yourself what all the buzz is about, I would urge you to take the beta for a spin: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/dpm/download/default.mspx.

The Data Protection Manager Technical Overview is located here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/dpm/evaluation/whitepaper.mspx

The Data Protection Manager Planning and Deployment Guide can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/dpm/proddocs/PDGTop.mspx  (this is really a good read)

I have been using this product for quite a few months now and I am really impressed. Umm…Ward – you work for MS.  True – even though I work for MS – not everything we have released has been the greatest product……. anyone remember MS BOB? 😉
The official release blurb is here:
As the latest member of the Windows Server System™ family, Microsoft® System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) is a server software application that is designed from the ground up to optimize disk-based backup and recovery.  Backing up data to disk provides the fastest way to recover data lost to user error or software and hardware corruption.  With Data Protection Manager, recovering information is as simple as browsing a share and copying directly from the Data Protection Manager to the production server.
Data Protection Manager provides several unique capabilities:
  • Rapid & Reliable Recovery– DPM enables IT administrators and end users to recover data in minutes instead of hours it takes to recover from tapes.
  • Efficient & Near Continuous Protection- DPM utilizes efficient byte level replication to deliver faster back up and less potential data loss.
  • Operational Simplicity- DPM lowers the total cost of your data protection environment by improving the efficiency of your operations.
