Copilot+ PC and Windows AI features

Recall (preview) is now available through the Windows Insider Program. After we get feedback on Recall from the Windows Insider community, as we typically do, we plan to make Recall (preview) available more widely to customers with Copilot+ PCs through a post-launch Windows Update. Learn more.

Recall (preview) helps you save time by easily connecting you to something you remember seeing on your Copilot+ PC. You can use Recall (preview) on Copilot+ PCs with Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS) to find and reengage with content you have viewed on your device. Recall is currently in preview status; during this phase, we will collect customer feedback, develop more controls for enterprise customers to manage and govern Recall data, and improve the overall experience for users. Once Recall is made widely available to customers, you may need to download the latest Windows updates to access it and other new AI features and experiences for Copilot+ PCs.

Recall (preview) is optimized for select languages, including English, Chinese (simplified), French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. This means Recall is able to retrieve snapshots from your PC’s timeline based on more sophisticated searches in these languages. During the preview phase, we will enhance optimization for additional languages. Recall can also retrieve snapshots from your PC’s timeline based on text-to-text searches in more than 160 languages.

Recall (preview) uses Copilot+ PC advanced processing capabilities to save images of your active screen every few seconds. The snapshots are encrypted and saved on your PC’s hard drive. You can use Recall to locate the content you have viewed on your PC using search or on a timeline bar that allows you to scroll through your snapshots. Once you find the snapshot that you were looking for in Recall, it will be analyzed and offer you options to interact with the content.

Recall (preview) will also enable you to reopen the snapshot to the original application from which it was created. As Recall is refined over time, it will open to the actual location in the source document, website, or email featured in the snapshot. This functionality will be improved during Recall’s preview phase.

Copilot+ PC storage size determines the number of snapshots that Recall can take and store. The minimum hard drive space needed to run Recall is 256 GB, and 50 GB of space must be available. The default allocation for Recall on a device with 256 GB will be 25 GB, which can store approximately 3 months of snapshots. You can increase the storage allocation for Recall in your PC Settings. Old snapshots will be deleted once you use your allocated storage, allowing new ones to be stored. Learn more about Recall.

Recall (preview) is a Windows AI feature that’s part of what makes Copilot+ PCs special, and Microsoft built privacy into Recall’s design from the ground up. The set-up experience of Copilot+ PCs will give you a choice to opt-in to saving snapshots using Recall. If you don’t proactively choose to turn it on, it will be off by default.

On Copilot+ PCs you will see the Recall taskbar icon after you first activate your device. You can use that icon to open Recall’s settings and make choices about what snapshots Recall collects and stores on your device. You can limit which snapshots Recall collects; for example, you can select specific apps or websites visited in a supported browser to filter out of your snapshots. (Filtering out specific websites will only work in supported browsers such as Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Google Chrome.) Learn more about privacy and control over your Recall experience. In addition, you can pause snapshots on demand from the Recall icon in the system tray, clear some or all snapshots that have been stored, or delete all the snapshots from your device.

Recall (preview) also does not take snapshots of certain kinds of content, including InPrivate web browsing sessions in Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome, or other Chromium-based browsers. It treats material protected with digital rights management (DRM) similarly; like other Windows apps such as the Snipping Tool, Recall will not save snapshots of DRM content.

In addition, the Sensitive information filter setting is on by default and helps reduce confidential information like passwords, national ID numbers, and credit card numbers from being stored in Recall. Your private information remains on your device at all times, regardless of whether the Sensitive information filter setting is on or off. For more information about the types of sensitive information that are filtered, see Privacy and control over your Recall experience.

Recall (preview) snapshots are kept on Copilot+ PCs themselves, on the local hard drive, and are protected using data encryption on your Windows 11 Home device and (if you have Windows 11 Pro or an enterprise Windows 11 SKU) BitLocker. Recall will come with additional layers of data protection including “just in time” decryption protected by Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS). Learn more about Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security. Recall snapshots will only be decrypted and accessible when the user authenticates. The search index database will also be encrypted. Recall snapshots are only linked to a specific user profile and Recall does not share them with other users, make them available for Microsoft to view, or use them for targeting advertisements. Snapshots are only available to the person whose profile was used to sign in to the device. If two people share a device with different profiles they will not be able to access each other’s snapshots. If they use the same profile to sign-in to the device then they will share a snapshots history. Otherwise, Recall snapshots are not available to other users or accessed by other applications or services. Learn more.

Live Captions allow you to translate audio and video content into English subtitles from 44 languages: Arabic, Basque, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Chinese (Cantonese), Chinese (Mandarin), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, Galician, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Maltese, Norwegian, Pashto, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Somali, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, and Welsh.

With Cocreator in Microsoft Paint, you can use text or image prompts to generate an interpretation of your vision. Cocreator works by translating your prompt into English, and prompts in U.S. English are likely to generate the most-accurate images. To access Cocreator, you will need to update the Microsoft Paint app to the latest version available in Microsoft Store. Cocreator requires login to a Microsoft account and internet connection, which help ensure the responsible use of AI. Learn more.

Automatic super resolution (Auto SR) seamlessly integrates with Windows on a Copilot+ PC with a Snapdragon® X Series processor to automatically enhance a set of existing games by default, and boosts frame rates while maintaining detailed visuals. Auto SR functions by automatically lowering the game's rendering resolution to increase framerate, then employs sophisticated AI technology to provide enhanced high-definition visuals. This results in a smoother, more detailed gaming experience. See Automatic super resolution for more information and a list of games that Auto SR is applied to by default.

Windows Studio Effects is the collective name of AI-powered video call and audio effects that are available on Copilot+ PCs and select Windows 11 devices with compatible NPUs. They include background blur, voice focus, eye contact: standard, and automatic framing, which are available on all Copilot+ PCs. In addition, Snapdragon® X Series devices come with creative filters, portrait light, and eye contact: teleprompter. All effects involve modifying the outbound and inbound audio and video feed to enhance communication. Learn more about what these effects can do at Windows Studio Effects - Microsoft Support. Windows Studio Effects require a device with a built-in camera.

These are new features in the Microsoft Photos app, that let you edit your photos or create new imagery with the assistance of AI. Both features use proprietary and open-source AI models that are fine-tuned by Microsoft. The models come with your Copilot+ PC or can be automatically downloaded from Microsoft Store the first time you try these features. Restyle Image uses a Sketch-to-Image model, using the text prompt you entered or selected to create the style and apply it to your selected photo. Image Creator uses a Text-to-Image model to turn the text you’ve entered into a series of images based on this description. Currently, both Restyle Image and Image Creator are optimized for prompts in U.S. English. Both features require logging in to a Microsoft account and internet connection, which helps ensure the responsible use of AI. Learn more. Restyle Image and Image Creator are available on Snapdragon® X Series-powered device and will roll out to AMD and Intel-powered devices through free Windows updates continuing into early 2025.
