Founded in 2000, Wemade is Korea’s leading game developer with recorded sales of KRW 561 billion, a 344% increase year-on-year, as well as an operating profit of KRW 326 billion for 2021. Wemade, loved by global fans for its great game services, is solidifying its status as a leading game company with the worldwide success of Mir 4, which was released in 2020.
Needless to say, one of the main keywords that are governing the global economy today are metaverse and NFT. The trend of these world-changing innovations is surging through digital companies and traditional industries. Including “The Legend of Mir 2,” which has become a legendary game itself, Wemade has emerged as Korea’s leading game company by introducing numerous global hit game services in its quest to stay at the forefront of this edgy trend in the game world. Currently, various industries are trying to utilize the metaverse, but Wemade believes that games are the closest service to the existing metaverse in terms of identity and economy. Mir 4, which was officially launched in the Korean market in November 2020 and started global service in August 2021, was the first challenge to realize Wemade’s ambitious metaverse vision.
Decision to collaborate with Microsoft to build a stable global gaming environment
Blockchain technology has been applied to the global version of Mir 4, which is designed so that in-game items can be traded for a cryptocurrency, which in turn can be traded at virtual asset exchanges. The so-called “Play & Earn” business model, in which users earn money while playing games, was introduced in the global version of Mir 4. Mir 4 is being loved worldwide with more than 1.3 million global simultaneous users. Wemade reports that Azure is playing a very important role in Mir 4 receiving great support from game users around the world.
Microsoft Azure has more global regions than any other competitor’s cloud solution on the market, and boasts many advantages including top-notch service, quality, and comprehensive global compliance. Based on these advantages, Wemade chose Azure for the development of Mir 4 and stable operation at the global level, which is leading to great results.
Through Azure, Wemade is accomplishing two things concurrently – a massive cost reduction and optimized operational efficiency.
Mir 4 has a wide range of Azure functions and services applied to it – such as Azure SQL Database, Azure Cache for Redis, Azure DevOps, Azure Data Explorer. The Azure SQL Database is a fully managed, Platform as a Service (PaaS) database engine that takes care of most of database management without any input from a user. Azure Cache for Redis provides commercial products from Redis open source and Redis Labs as managed services, which can greatly improve the performance and scalability of game applications. Azure DevOps is also a must. Wemade operates more than 300 databases for Mir 4 global version service, and Azure DevOps’ CI/CD pipeline prevents errors during service distribution and maintains the integrity between the game service and the database with minimal resources. The Azure Data Explorer is a fully managed service for data analysis that very quickly carries out real time analysis functions on high-volume data streaming collected from applications, websites, and IoT devices. Through Azure Data Explorer, Wemade has dramatically reduced the resources used for game log analysis and is greatly increasing efficiency.
We’re looking forward to continuing cooperation with Microsoft, which has unparalleled expertise in gaming, cloud, and blockchain.
Wemade has confirmed its potential as a global blockchain-based game company with its success of the Mir 4 global version. Wemade plans to go beyond game development to complete Wemix Black Chain Economy, Wemade’s own blockchain ecosystem, by launching cryptocurrency, individual game coins, coin exchanges, NFT exchanges, and De-Fi (Decentralized Finance) services.
Based on the in-depth technical support received from Microsoft and its partners, Wemade was able to develop and distribute Mir 4, and it is now successfully operating. Microsoft will continue to do its best, like it has in the past, to support Wemade’s grand metaverse vision for the future.
“Wemade was deeply aware of Azure’s strengths as a game service-friendly cloud platform that supports game development and highly flexible operation for the global market. As you know, due to the nature of the game service, we had no choice but to find a highly scalable cloud platform because we had to prepare for situations where users suddenly flock from dynamic situations.”
