Metrikus innovates on Microsoft Azure to make buildings more efficient and sustainable

“We need to look at sustainability and we need to give people the data to make more informed decisions about their building,” says Michael Grant, COO & Co-Founder at Metrikus.

Metrikus

A building efficiency platform built on Microsoft Azure

The Metrikus platform brings together data from multiple sources across a building, whether it’s from IoT sensors, the Building Management System or elsewhere. By aggregating data in a central application, it enables building owners to understand more clearly the performance of their building, including in terms of energy consumption. In this way, they can understand where efficiencies can be made and to prioritise actions.

“We create a platform that gives people a better understanding of what’s going on in their company and buildings,” says Michael Grant. “We do that by combining world-class technology and visualisations with the very best sensors.”

The company chose to invent and build its platform on Microsoft Azure. Keith Jump, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Metrikus explains, “Security, scale, performance and resilience – all of those things are what made us take the final decision with Microsoft.”

Using Azure IoT Hub to invent and connect

“There are many different devices in the IoT world to connect to,” continues Keith Jump. “Microsoft Azure had a unique service called Azure IoT Hub and that’s enabled us to connect to millions and millions of data sources.”

By leveraging the scalable functionality of native Azure tooling, Metrikus is free to innovate in other areas, while keeping developer overheads to a minimum. The aggregation of diverse data sources is presented in slick dashboards and visualisations which make interpretation and further analysis easy.

“Presenting it in a really slick way at our front end for our customers takes the hassle out of integration in a smart building,” says Keith Jump.

Customers are empowered to boost efficiency and sustainability

Accenture adopted the Metrikus platform when it moved to new headquarters in Madrid in order to monitor the space and make sure it was operating as efficiently as possible.

“The challenge was to build a space that fused technology and human ingenuity along with their sustainability value promise to achieve their net zero 2025 environmental goals,” explains Megs Tessema, Account Director at Metrikus. “Accenture was able to improve the efficiency of their daily management of the building… and develop a predictive occupancy model training to save energy while preserving employee comfort.”

At the Met Office, the Metrikus platform was used to optimise HVAC efficiency, resulting in a 20% saving in HVAC running costs.

“Our customers right across the world are experiencing similar benefits at a time when efficiency is not only essential from a sustainability point of view but from an economic perspective too,” says Michael Grant. “As customer subscriptions continue to accelerate and availability to datasets widens, having Microsoft Azure IoT as the cloud on which this is built is key to our success.”
