Hilti empowers its diverse workforce with Workday for Microsoft Teams

Hilti is a world leader in the design and manufacture of cutting-edge technologies, hardware, software, and services for the professional construction industry. With 32,000 employees in more than 120 countries, Hilti serves roughly 280,000 customer contacts each day developing products and solutions that drive productivity, safety, and sustainability in construction. With a diverse workforce spanning office-based, field-based, and operation environments, Hilti needed a solution to provide employees with a more simplified, flexible way to complete key tasks—no matter their location. Through the successful adoption of Workday for Microsoft Teams, employees can now quickly and easily request time off, share feedback, and check in and out without ever having to leave Teams. Not only does this save employees time, increase engagement, and improve productivity, but it also enables them to focus on their purpose of making construction better while delivering a better customer experience.

“With Teams being used so frequently by our team members, Workday for Teams offers a great opportunity to meet people where they are so they can get Workday tasks done as quickly as possible and focus their time on adding value for our customers.”

Improving internal processes was critical for supporting a dispersed global workforce

With thousands of employees spread across the world, Hilti was in search of new and innovative solutions to create a more efficient and user-centric experience for its workforce. Many employees perceived some of their internal processes as too complex and cumbersome, particularly their systems for requesting and approving time off, sharing feedback with colleagues, and other tasks necessary for daily operations. The challenge was further compounded by the fact that many of Hilti’s employees operate in field-based roles, without access to a desktop for most of the day. So, not only was it critical to provide a faster, simpler way for employees to complete their tasks, but their tools needed to support a more inclusive, flexible way of working.

Simplifying communication and collaboration for a better employee experience

Hilti, driven by a deep commitment to innovation and continuous improvement, is always searching for ways to simplify and optimize its systems and processes to enhance the employee experience. In 2020, Hilti launched Moment, their people approach, as part of their ongoing HR transformation, with Workday as the supporting tool. Coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic, Hilti recognized the need for a platform that could support its global hybrid workforce, leading to the adoption of Microsoft Teams as its central collaboration platform. This decision was fueled by the urgent need to enable its workforce to stay connected, productive, and engaged, no matter where they were located.

With Teams established as Hilti’s main collaboration tool, the opportunity to enhance the user experience and increase adoption of Workday presented itself with Workday for Microsoft Teams. The integration enables easy communication and collaboration, allowing employees quick access to time off requests, approving vacation time, sharing feedback, and accessing other important data related to their work. Now, employees can complete internal tasks efficiently from anywhere and at any time, granting them more time to focus on high-value activities.

“I use Workday for Teams to approve holidays for the team,” says Jodie Allcroft, Credit and Collection Manager at Hilti Great Britain. “This is very easy because it’s just one click. Giving feedback is another fast and easy function. You just type the feedback in and a few clicks later it’s shared, and you can go on with your day.”

Stefanie Groth, Head of HR Transformation Projects at Hilti, adds, “With Teams being used so frequently by our team members, Workday for Teams offers a great opportunity to meet people where they are so they can get Workday tasks done as quickly as possible and focus their time on adding value for our customers.”

Staying on top of tasks and celebrating team wins has never been easier

Today, over half of Hilti’s employees are actively using Workday for Microsoft Teams. The platform’s user-friendly design and the significant time-saving benefits it offers for administrative tasks have garnered rave reviews from employees across the organization. From requesting time off to providing feedback, Workday’s one-click approval process and real-time recognition feature have proved particularly popular with team members, making it easier than ever to stay on top of essential tasks and celebrate achievements directly in Teams. As a result, Hilti has seen a significant improvement in the overall employee experience, with enhanced productivity, streamlined workflows, and more time to focus on the company’s purpose of making construction better.
