Specialty pharmaceutical company Endo is using education sessions on Microsoft technology to empower its team members and modernize work practices. A longtime Microsoft customer, Endo wanted to use Microsoft 365 capabilities to streamline business processes and improve collaboration across departments. In 2023, Endo’s IT department began a series of open training sessions for all its team members, including its senior executives, to discover more productive ways to accomplish tasks. About 75% of Endo’s office-based workforce participated in these sessions, gaining new skills and confidence in their technical acumen, fostering a culture of experimentation, and laying the foundation for ongoing innovation.
Endo is a specialty pharmaceutical company that develops and delivers life-enhancing products through focused implementation. With a longstanding partnership with Microsoft, Endo had previously deployed the Microsoft 365 suite of products, and in 2023, it embarked on a strategic initiative to boost its team members’ familiarity and use of the technology. Endo’s goal was to enhance productivity and increase efficiency throughout the enterprise.
To achieve this, Endo identified training opportunities across the organization and launched a training series called “Digital Ask Me Anything” (DAMA). Endo’s outreach has sparked newfound productivity and a genuine interest in using technology to transform work processes. Endo is reimagining how teams collaborate and innovate by investing in continuous learning.
Optimizing technology investments to boost productivity
Endo has a history of pursuing continuous evolution and growth to help everyone it serves live their best lives. This innovative mindset extends beyond medicine—it also influences Endo’s internal operations. The company recognized that empowering its team members to find and embrace new, more productive ways to complete tasks could give it a competitive advantage in an increasingly connected world.
In late 2022, Endo assessed team members’ capabilities with the available digital tools. The company had recently updated its Microsoft 365 technology stack, but not all team members could capitalize on the new solutions. Endo’s IT team saw an opportunity to equip the entire organization with essential skills. Collaborating with its business leaders, the IT team identified areas where additional training could empower teams to upskill.
This forward-thinking initiative became part of Endo’s 2023 corporate scorecard, highlighting the executive leadership’s commitment to using technology to increase efficiency. “Our executive team wholeheartedly endorsed this initiative, actively participating in the program and dedicating time during executive meetings to personally upskill on digital solutions, including the Microsoft 365 stack,” says Cheryl Stouch, Chief Information Officer at Endo.
Building technical acumen with open training forums
Endo’s IT leadership conceptualized a series of informational sessions, DAMA, to offer team members a deeper understanding of Microsoft 365 capabilities. In these DAMA sessions, participants explore various Microsoft 365 features, with a special focus on collaboration tools, including Microsoft Teams, Microsoft OneDrive, and Microsoft SharePoint. The forums cover planned topics, but team members are also encouraged to step forward with questions or suggestions during open Q&A sessions.
To complement DAMA, Endo’s IT team introduced a weekly spotlight, “Digital Tip of the Week.” These short videos showcase innovative ways to accomplish tasks using digital tools. Sometimes the tips are inspired by team members’ queries during DAMA sessions. “Every week there’s something new that comes out,” says Kelli Gerrow, Director of IT Strategy, Operations, and Performance Management at Endo. “We try to keep people interested and learning new ways to accomplish tasks.”
Throughout Endo’s technical enhancement program, the IT staff members knew that they could rely on Microsoft. “Our Microsoft support technology advisor helps us out with any issues in the Microsoft 365 technology stack,” says Mike Freed, Executive Director of IT for Commercial, Corporate Affairs, and Digital Workplace Productivity Solutions at Endo. “The relationship we have with our advisor has been extremely helpful for the bigger questions we receive that we cannot answer. If they don’t know the answer, they will find it for us.”
Fostering a culture of experimentation with 55 training sessions
In 2023, Endo’s IT team orchestrated 55 DAMA sessions for its team members, including 7 sessions tailored for the senior executive team. Approximately 75% of the company’s office workforce participated in these sessions, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. The chief financial officer understood the value of upskilling the team and endorsed mandatory sessions for the finance department.
Moreover, individual team members began to experiment independently with Microsoft offerings. The DAMA program empowered them with the knowledge and confidence to explore new possibilities on their own, fostering a culture of curiosity and innovation. Endo’s team members embraced collaborative tools, such as SharePoint and OneDrive, streamlining document review and co-authorship.
In August 2023, Endo introduced Bing Chat Enterprise—now Microsoft Copilot—as an AI assistant. Team members are using Copilot to generate initial drafts of announcements and intranet articles. One senior leader discovered that Copilot enhanced their productivity by supporting brainstorming activities.
DAMA also had a profound impact on Endo’s IT team. Each member of IT played a pivotal role in delivering DAMA sessions, requiring them to be prepared for any questions. “When you run a session where anyone can ask anything, there’s a heightened seriousness about learning new skills and tools,” says Stouch. This experience also fostered greater empathy within IT, helping them understand the perspectives of their business partners.
Breaking down barriers to unlock innovation
By fostering a culture of continuous learning and technological exploration, Endo is poised to reimagine work processes and drive productivity gains across the organization. Endo’s investment in IT tools and comprehensive team member training has forged a stronger dynamic relationship between IT and the broader organization. The company is eager to continue boosting its technical acumen in 2024, building upon the success of the DAMA initiative. Team members recognize the pivotal role of IT as a partner in driving efficiency, productivity, and innovation.
“We’ve built a bridge with our business,” says Stouch. “IT isn’t merely about finding technology; it’s about empowering our team members to use it and explore its potential. We’re here to guide you in understanding and embracing your digital workspace.”
“Our executive team wholeheartedly endorsed this initiative, actively participating in the program and dedicating time during executive meetings to personally upskill on digital solutions, including the Microsoft 365 stack.”
