Malabar Gold and Diamonds unifies data, systems, and teams with Microsoft Dynamics 365

Different business units at Malabar Gold had different legacy systems to manage their processes. These disparate systems were becoming increasingly inefficient and costly to manage and could not keep up with business demands.

 

Malabar Gold decided to move to Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management to support back-office functions, export operations, bullion processes, supply chain and inventory, and Dynamics 365 Commerce for retail operations and point-of-sale.

 

Today Malabar Gold has a fully integrated solution providing centralized master data management, comprehensive financial reporting, inventory visibility, efficient POS, and streamlined retail stores operation.

Malabar Gold and Diamonds (Malabar Gold), headquartered in Kozhikode, Kerala, India, is one of the world's largest jewelry retailers, with an annual turnover of over US$6.2 billion. The company has a strong retail network with more than 357 showrooms spread across 13 countries. The brand offers an extensive range of jewelry collections and designs catering to the diverse interests of various age groups and ethnicities.

Disparate systems led to constraints in business operations

Different business units at Malabar Gold had different legacy systems to manage their processes. The business faced multiple challenges owing to the disparate systems.

Decentralized processes

With multiple Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems for different functions like retail, inventory and finance, a single, integrated view of the business was out of reach. Moreover, it was becoming increasingly inefficient and costly to manage the technical infrastructure to support all the systems, and their performance was being compromised.

Lack of scalability and security

The business was growing fast, and there were certain periods of peak transactional activity. The legacy system could not keep up with these business demands. Also, the on-premises systems were becoming obsolete, which led to security and integration challenges.

The team at Malabar Gold was looking to consolidate its operations in a single system. They decided to implement a modern, cloud-based ERP system that would enable them to standardize business processes and centralized data management across the enterprise and offer them scalability, security and enhance performance.

We were seeking a unified platform to enhance our retail, supply chain, and manufacturing operations. The implementation of Microsoft Dynamics 365 effectively eliminated our disconnected systems, providing a scalable and secure cloud-based solution tailored to our business needs.

Moving to the cloud with Microsoft Dynamics 365

To improve business performance and infrastructure management, Malabar Gold decided to move to the cloud with Microsoft Dynamics 365. They worked with the team at Microsoft to implement Dynamics 365 Finance and Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management to support back-office functions, export operations, bullion processes, supply chain, inventory and Dynamics 365 Commerce for retail operations and point-of-sale (POS) in more than 370 retail stores, and export to Azure Data Lake for analytics and reporting. About 3,500 people were trained in the system.

Extensibility and flexibility

As a jewelry retailer, customer service is key to Malabar Gold. Dynamics 365 provides the flexibility it needs to enable bespoke business processes. For example, in retail operations, sales representatives create virtual shopping carts with customer order details. To provide the best service these carts are often transferred to another representative to provide additional services and complete the sale. Dynamics 365 was easily extended to enable this unique process, and the extensions are updated natively with the system, providing rich functional capabilities without the fuss.

Today Malabar Gold has a single, fully integrated solution providing centralized master data management, comprehensive financial reporting, and inventory visibility across multiple  legal entities. This has helped with omnichannel inventory planning and accurate merchandising by making the right products available at the right stores at the right time.
