HTC creates products more sustainably with Microsoft Cloud for Sustainability

HTC needed an easy, more accurate, and automated solution to manage data from 500-plus suppliers and hundreds of product parts.

With Microsoft Sustainability Manager, HTC has a faster and simpler way of getting and managing the emissions data it needs to reach its environmental goals.

Emissions data used to take 40 to 60 days of work to collect manually. With Sustainability Manager, HTC can view this data in one click of a button.

HTC Corporation

HTC Corporation, creator of smartphones, virtual reality headsets, and smart devices, has a supplier network of more than 500 vendors for the hundreds of small parts needed to create its products. HTC, which also sells platforms, services, and content, recognized that by minimizing the environmental impact of its manufacturing processes, the company and its consumers could contribute to the wellbeing of the planet.

To do this, HTC needed to quickly collect, integrate, calculate, report, and monitor carbon emissions of its operations and each product component, using common data formats and computational model measurements. It also had to stay compliant with the Taiwan Financial Supervisory Commission’s guidelines and future global environmental regulations. The frequent updates to the Carbon Footprint Emission Factors in Taiwan’s manufacturing industry make compliance challenging. With so many parts required to design and manufacture HTC’s world-renowned devices and platforms, tracking the environmental impact was no easy feat.

HTC needed a solution.

Powering environmental goals with data

The company chose Microsoft Cloud for Sustainability, which helps accelerate sustainability progress and business growth by bringing together ESG data and AI capabilities from Microsoft and its partner network. HTC relies on Microsoft Sustainability Manager, a key component of Cloud for Sustainability. “We find it to be a comprehensive data management platform that can track and report Scope 1 to 3 emissions, while also integrating other environmental data,” says Falcon Chen, Development Team Manager at HTC. “I liked its customizability, security and privacy reputation, strong technical support and training, and brand credibility.”

SYSTEX Corporation played a pivotal role in deploying and customizing Sustainability Manager, along with facilitating communication with the product group at Microsoft. Microsoft and SYSTEX assisted HTC in building a centralized and customized carbon emission system. This system simplifies the process of obtaining reports from suppliers, centralizing data collection from internal systems that monitor operations emissions, and making data-driven decisions to reduce environmental impact. “HTC is committed to sustainability and reaching net zero by 2050 based on the Science Based Targets Initiative,” says Madeline Chen, Chief Sustainability Officer at HTC. “HTC is devoted to working with Microsoft and partners to build up the carbon management platform with Cloud for Sustainability to show we are willing to invest and taking carbon emission reduction seriously with a systematic tool.”

HTC is committed to reach net zero by 2050, and we needed an efficient tool like Sustainability Manager to understand what our carbon emission status is now, and closely monitor our reduction performance along the way. Now we have one.

A data collection effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

HTC is one of the first in Asia to use Cloud for Sustainability to achieve ISO14064-1:2018 (greenhouse gas) and ISO14067:2018 (product carbon footprint) certifications, making use of auto-generated data in reporting to facilitate inventory and verification. “Since using Microsoft Sustainability Manager, we have significantly saved resources on data collection and observed a measurable decrease in greenhouse gas emissions as we work toward our sustainability goals,” says Richard Tsai, Head of Global IT at HTC.

HTC is also thrilled about the user adoption rate and satisfaction of Sustainability Manager measured by sign-in frequency, feature usage, and feedback.

Other benefits include reduced dataset errors, automated data collection, data standardization, better understanding of suppliers’ emissions for improvement, and generation of visual emissions reports. This saves time in collection, organization, analysis, and reporting: what used to take 40 to 60 days for one dataset now takes one click.

HTC now has a product for planning future goals. “HTC is committed to reach net zero by 2050, and we needed an efficient tool like Sustainability Manager to understand what our carbon emission status is now, and closely monitor our reduction performance along the way. Now we have one,” says Chen.
