Eric Sommerlade

Eric Sommerlade leads a team of vision researchers in Reading, U.K.  His focus is on efforts to integrate systems and develop algorithms for various vision-based features across the Microsoft family of devices.

Eric received his Ph.D. from the University of Oxford and his M.Sc. at Hamburg University in Germany.  He did post-doctoral work in tracking and SLAM (simultaneous location and mapping), and led various teams for 3D capture, display technology, and user interaction.  He advised several startups and founded one himself for 3D and 360 degree image capture.

Before joining Microsoft’s Applied Sciences Group (ASG) in 2019, he ran R&D labs in Boulder, Colorado, and Oxford, England, for RealD, a 3D film business.
