And though Griffin claims they have no obligation to one another, Julia still struggles with her growing feelings for him. When a restaurant patron notices a resemblance between him and Spencer, Charlie decides to assume responsibility, and he gives Pamela the money. But after he breaks the news to Kirsten, mother and child disappear without a trace. Finally, as Claudia shows up unannounced and uninvited to the Julia's high school bonfire, Bailey finds an unexpected source of support from Sarah, a classmate and waitress at the restaurant.

Upon learning that Griffin broke up with his girlfriend, Julia suddenly bails out on the "kiss-in" with Justin as Claudia takes some heat about her new "breasts" and Kirsten has second thoughts about marriage. Back at school, Bailey is determined to get into a college far from home, and the kissing protest convinces Ms. Stickley to her ban. Finally, after the attention she gets convinces Claudia to dump her new bra, intimacy develops between Julia and Griffin as Charlie woos Kirsten by offering to adopt his baby brother Owen as their own.

Meanwhile, as Julia worries that Griffin lacks interest in her, Justin suspects he's being deceived. It's not until they're preparing for the engagement party that Charlie's siblings are told he and Kirsten eloped. And while Bailey and Julia are upset, it's Claudia who really feels cheated. However, Julia is next to hit the ceiling when Dudley unknowingly invites Griffin to the party -- after she asked Justin. As Griffin's refusal to leave forces Julia to explain to an angry Justin, Sarah stuns Bailey by revealing she's in love with him. And when they have second thoughts, Charlie and Kirsten return home to face an angry household, explaining that they just couldn't get married without everyone there.

Unaware that his sister is gone, Charlie worries that Kathleen is getting too close, especially after she offers to take the family to Hawaii. Meanwhile, at a party that he hopes will keep Sarah away from her new friends, Bailey is surprised to find she's invited her band without asking him first. And it's then that she learns Bailey is concerned about her new attitude and wardrobe, too. When Bailey tries to apologize, Sarah accepts after learning he got her band a job at the restaurant. But things again turn tense when Bailey asks the musicians to tone down their act for the Salingers' crowd. When Charlie reveals he's not ready for more than a casual affair, the news causes Kathleen to take an overdose of pills. Rescued by Charlie, she admits that his cavalier attitude about their relationship scares her. And Bailey's jealousy upsets Sarah, who suggests her changing doesn't have to pose a threat. Meanwhile, when Julia realizes that New Orleans is not the answer to her problems, Griffin takes her to the one place where he's found comfort since arriving -- his school's church. Finally, Justin realizes Julia lied about her trip, but is willing to let it go in order to repair their fractured relationship.

As Charlie prepares for an important review of the restaurant and Kathleen for a big TV awards ceremony happening the same night, Jake returns late from a trip to Arizona. And while Claudia is glad when he finally shows up, Bailey is angry -- especially after he accidentally discovers Jake has a daughter he's kept a secret from them. Meanwhile, as Julia struggles to recover from her miscarriage, Justin writes a fable which chronicles the impending demise of their relationship. After Kathleen uses her acceptance speech to declare her love, even an outstanding review of the restaurant can't keep Charlie from being worried. So when Kathleen wants him to meet her mother, Charlie claims he's getting back together with Kirsten. After tracking down his daughter Lauren, Bailey accuses Jake of being a liar and demands that he move out. Though managing to get Julia's support, Bailey cannot get Claudia, Charlie or Sarah to back the ouster. Meanwhile, after Kathleen learns Kirsten isn't even in town, she realizes Charlie lied. And to ease Justin's concern about their failing relationship, Julia halfheartedly agrees to attend a school dance together. Following a painful encounter with Claudia, Bailey decides to give Jake one more chance -- only to discover he's already decided to move on after promising to stay in touch. Meanwhile, the date at the dance does little to ease Justin's fears about losing Julia. And when he drops by her apartment, Charlie discovers that not only does Kathleen know he's been lying, but that she's made a real estate deal which could lead to the restaurant being closed.

After Joe learns that their lease may not be renewed, Charlie is forced to admit that his romance with Kathleen has jeopardized the restaurant's future. And when he tries drinking to forget his problems, Charlie ends up in jail. When Sarah is mugged, Bailey's concern for her safety makes life difficult for her and the band. Meanwhile, Julia signs them up for a photography class, only to discover Justin has already made other plans. But when she's out taking pictures with her classmate Ian, Julia spots Justin with another girl. Trying to mend their tattered relationship, Justin seeks his new friend's advice on a gift for Julia, only to find that he and Corey are drawn to each other. Julia also a hard time getting motivated after an unexpected kiss from Ian. And when Sarah is on the receiving end of some unsolicited kisses from Matt, she has no idea they've been seen by Will. Meanwhile, Charlie discovers Joe has no intention of fighting the eviction and is closing the restaurant for good. And when Jody arranges for them to be invited to a classmate's party, Claudia balks at being fixed up with another boy, especially after finding herself alone with him in a dark closet. As Justin and Julia find it increasingly difficult to avoid other romantic entanglements, Sarah is feeling smothered by Bailey's attention. However, Bailey isn't sure he can care about her in any other way right now. And following her experience at the party, Claudia sees that she and Jody have little in common. Finally, after his disaster with the restaurant, Charlie tries to get back together with Kirsten, only to discover she's engaged to be married.

Having done little to keep Kathleen from taking over the restaurant, Charlie seeks Jake's help in finding a way to keep Salinger's from closing. And as Justin and Julia struggle with a joint class assignment, Claudia's friendship with Jody is permanently damaged by Jody's new boyfriend. Meanwhile, thinking that Sarah is only seeing him out of pity, Bailey takes the initiative and announces that he wants to break up -- unaware that it's the last thing she wants to do. After Julia accuses Justin of cheating on her, their relationship spirals ever-downward when she admits to seeing someone, too. When Charlie attempts to get back together, Kristen sees it as grasping for something to hang on to in his time of need. But following a nasty confrontation with her fiancée, Charlie encourages Kirsten to marry Michael after all. Meanwhile, as everyone warns Bailey to think twice about leaving Sarah, Julia's second thoughts fail to make an impression on Justin. As Julia and Justin use the classroom assignment to give voice to their own farewells, Bailey discovers how wrong he's been about Sarah. He then learns that Jake can keep the restaurant from closing only if he gives up the money he's set aside for college. So Bailey decides to use his scholarship to save the restaurant as he mends his relationship with Sarah. Finally, after Kirsten backs out of getting married at the last possible minute, she and Charlie arrive at a family dinner to celebrate saving the restaurant.
